Job Description:

Job Summary/Basic Function:


The purpose of this position is to raise private funding for Boise State University through corporate and foundation contributions. The position is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospective and current corporate and foundation major gift donors and research sponsors who require complex written submissions as well as the normal relationship building work. This position will be a member of the Corporate and Foundations team for the Boise State Foundation.

A nonprofit Idaho organization, the Boise State University Foundation was established in 1964 for the benefit of Boise State University. We work to secure philanthropic support for the university by developing and nurturing relationships with our alumni and friends and stewarding gifts made to support Boise State. The Foundation works closely with university leadership, the Boise State University Alumni Association, and the Bronco Athletic Association.


Mission: To build a greater Boise State University, we provide fundraising leadership and service across the university and partner with donors and alumni to inspire private support.

Level Scope:


Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of area typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.


Essential Functions:



60% of Time the position must:

  • Manage a portfolio of prospective foundations and companies to fund university priorities.
  • Plan and implement strategies to reach corporate and foundations largely through written proposals but inclusive of built relationships to acquire pledges, outright gifts, and funding for grants and sponsored research.
  • Analyze company and foundation websites to determine primary focus areas of philanthropic support to determine the likelihood of a prospect for Boise State.
  • Manage a calendar of submission dates for letters of intent/interest, proposals, and reports.
  • Work with development directors and faculty to create proposals that match focus areas to university needs for both philanthropic and sponsored projects.
  • Conduct proposal writing workshops for development directors, staff, and faculty.

35% of Time the position must:

  • Maintain relevant website pages and produce updates for distribution.
  • Assist the Foundation and University marketing and communications teams with writing funding success announcements.
  • Analyze the monthly Office of Sponsored Programs activity reports.
  • Edit proposals written by other development directors or faculty members.

5% of Time the position must:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to write complex proposals to fund both gifts and sponsored research.
  • Demonstrated ability to research corporate and foundations to determine viability as a prospect.
  • Demonstrated ability with grant writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage prospects from identification through stewardship.
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Must be organized and demonstrate the ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to articulate and meet goals/objectives.
  • Ability to think through complicated processes and have exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to apply university policies regarding gifts and sponsored projects.
  • Ability to work with faculty and university leadership to develop complex proposals.

Minimum Qualifications:


Bachelor's Degree and 5 years' experience or equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years grant writing experience is required, preferably in a university setting.
  • Experience working in higher education.

Salary and Benefits:


Salary range starts at $80,000 annually and is commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):
  • 12 paid holidays AND the University is closed between Christmas and New Year's (requires use of 3 vacation days)
  • Between 12-24 annual paid vacation days for full-time Professional and Classified staff depending on position type and years of service
