Job Summary

NetApp IT supports a large and diverse portfolio of technologies, ranging from mature 'heritage' systems to cloud-native microservices-based systems hosted in AWS, leveraging a range of IaaS and abstracted services. The shared services Observability and Event Management stack is highly flexible and capable of monitoring the full range of systems across the NetApp Worldwide IT portfolio. The Observability and Event Management team offers application engineering teams the option for fully managed observability delivery or self service. The Observability fabric is based on Zenoss, Splunk, Apica, ServiceNow and related technologies.

We're looking for an engineering manager to take this platform to the next level. This will be a hands-on managerial role, leading of a team of 3-5 engineers. We think the best managers are also great engineers that understand the art of the possible, industry patterns and standards, and have a first-hand understanding of what works well and what doesn't. You'll work in partnership with peer teams to ensure that our observability and telemetry systems are well optimized to provide high levels of transparency at the right level of granularity. Cardinality remains a thing to manage, but we don't subordinate to it. Getting visibility to the right levels is our north star.

Job Requirements

This role will require experience in the following:

  • The end-to-end observability --> event management cycle (ensuring high quality detection capability, intelligent routing, actioning, etc)

  • Comprehensive understanding of observability standards in the AWS ecosystem

  • Developer self-service patterns; high flexibility / extensibility

  • Operate as the "chief architect" of the Observability Platform

  • Monitoring containerization technologies and Kubernetes

  • Build a culture of learning where it's safe to fail, fail fast, learn from it, and improve

  • Agile development methods / standards

  • Linux and Windows based platforms

  • Observability automation from workload inception to deprecation

  • On premise, IaaS (AWS and Azure), abstracted services across both platforms, and SaaS services

  • SNMP, synthetic transactions, log aggregation / parsing, application specific monitoring, etc.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proactive delivery of communication and follow-up

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints

Education

  • Extensive experience w/ observability and Telemetry management technologies and methods

  • Experience with the operationalization of observability outputs

  • Programming ability in at least one scripting language (Python, Ruby, etc)

  • 6+ years experience with Zenoss, Splunk, Apica, ServiceNow and related technologies

  • 4+ years of people management experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in CompSci or related area of study or equivalent professional experience
