Overview

The HVAC Controls apprentice performs tasks in support of a wide variety of HVAC Controls maintenance activities. The incumbent performs assigned duties under direction by supervision, and Senior DDC Controls Technicians.

This structured apprenticeship program consists of four years of on the job training combined with four years classroom instruction at an approved vocational-technical school (2-3 evenings/week, during the academic year). Maintains good standing as an apprentice by successfully completing all education and on-the-job requirements as outlined in the department’s Apprenticeship Agreement. The incumbent follows University rules and regulations at all times.

Candidates applying for this position must pass an aptitude test in order to be considered for an interview.



Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties may be assigned:

  • HVAC Controls Maintenance and Repair Operations (Time on task approximately 70%). Assists in effectively and safely performing a wide range of HVAC Controls related tasks, including the troubleshooting, repair, restoration, and modification of campus HVAC Control Systems and associated equipment in accordance with the apprenticeship program on-the-job training requirements. With guidance, carries out routine HVAC Controls work such as preventive maintenance testing and inspections. Performs additional assignments including overtime, after hours, special events and emergency call in work. Follows and abides by the department’s customer service standards. Utilizes a Computerized Maintenance Management Software program to fully document work activities. Performs work safely and follows all university safe work rules and practices.

  • Training and Education (Time on task approximately 25%). Through teamwork, observation and listening, the apprentice will continue to develop through practical trade experience. Supplements practical trade experience by attending defined training and learning programs and other apprenticeship related educational and instructional courses.

  • Additional Departmental Duties (Time on task approximately 5%). When snowstorms occur, the apprentice is a essential employee who is mandated to augment the Grounds Department in the removal of snow and the de-icing of walks and steps. Other duties as assigned.

  • Must be a high school graduate or possess an equivalency (GED).
  • Must have a technical aptitude for learning HVAC Controls trade skills.
  • Possess the ability to effectively follow directions in a consistent and effective manner.
  • Must be able to successfully complete all educational and on-the-job requirements of the apprenticeship program.
  • Must possess a basic understanding of safe work practices in a trade shop environment, and follow all shop safe work rules, procedures and practices.
  • Able to follow the department’s customer service standards.
  • Possess the ability to learn and understand technical documentation related to the HVAC Controls technical field.
  • Must be able to communicate and work well with others.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check.
  • Must have the ability to learn computer basics and be able to work with the department’s software programs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job..

  • stand or walk up to 2 hours at one time, up to 8 hours per day;

  • lift up to 100 pounds to waist height and up to 35 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead:
  • frequently use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing or pulling (34 – 66% of the workday);
  • occasionally climb stairs or ladders, dig, use jack hammer or chipping tools, lie down, push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds (less than 33% of the work day);
  • frequently bend, squat, kneel, knee stand, lift overheard, reach overhead, push or pull with forces up to 35 pounds; (34 – 66% of the work day);
  • work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;
  • Possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.
