Job Description:

TransCore (TCI), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is seeking a Lead Technician to join our team in Houston, Texas.

Job Summary: The Lead Technician performs on-site or in-house servicing, repair and/or installation of Intelligent Traffic Systems equipment such as CCTV systems, Dynamic Messaging Signs, Ramp Metering, Wrong Way Detection, etc. This job may include any aspect of field support, maintenance, and installation, and is not limited to electrical, data, and fiber optic cable installation; conduit and pull box installation; pole and foundation installation, troubleshooting and repair of electronic equipment, systems, and wiring; installation of equipment; upgrades, modifications, programming, preventive maintenance actions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Installs equipment including but not limited to cameras, detectors, controller cabinets.
  • Installs electrical conductor, data conductor, and fiber optic cable.
  • Installs pull boxes, conduit, poles and foundations.
  • Connects conductors to equipment to make equipment work correctly.
  • Connects electrical conductors to power services to energize equipment.
  • Tests devices to ensure they work correctly.
  • Precise fusion splicing of fiber optic cables, ensuring low insertion loss and maintaining signal integrity, using specialized equipment and tools to create permanent and reliable splices.
  • Prepares fiber optic cables for splicing by stripping, cleaning, cleaving and organizing fibers according to industry standards.
  • Conducts comprehensive optical testing using OTDRs, Power Meter/Light Sources, Traffic Identifiers, and VFLs to verify splice quality, cable continuity and network performance.
  • Prepares logs to keep track of field conditions and installation activities.
  • Mentors/trains less experienced technicians.
  • Responds to corrective maintenance requests within an acceptable time frame.
  • Maintains accurate and up to date records of all splicing activities, test results and network configurations.
  • Completes reports, logs and performs shift-to-shift communications in accordance with established policies, procedures and local practices.
  • Collaborates with network engineers and technicians to diagnose and resolve issues related to fiber optic connectivity, signal loss or other network anomalies. Implementing corrective actions to restore network functionality.
  • Driving is a key requirement for this position.

Education: High School Diploma, or equivalent. Relevant technical certifications preferred.

Required Skills:


  • Typically requires a minimum of 2 years of experience using fiber splicing equipment and fiber optic test equipment.
  • Repair skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to diagnose and troubleshoot network issues.
  • Ability to interpret and generate technical documentation, including splice logs, test reports and network diagrams.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions is required.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, climb and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to operate a bucket truck in a safe manner at heights up to 60'.
  • Must be available to work on-call for emergency situations as needed.

Desired Skills:


  • Previous experience with traffic signal, intelligent transportation, and/or tolling systems
  • Experience with electrical work (primarily generators and transformers)

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
