The senior design engineer will design and specify mechanical systems for data center and computer room projects. Specifically, he/she will be responsible for the design, engineering, and construction oversight of chilled water plants, DX systems, liquid-cooled IT, all HVAC, heat exchangers, pumps, CRAC units, diesel fuel systems, fire protection, plumbing, and controls. The position requires an expert understanding of incorporating reliability, redundancy, and value into each design. Daily tasks will include conducting field site surveys, systems assessments, creation of CAD-based plans, schematics, and coordinated construction documents, equipment selection, load calculations, control diagrams, systems narratives, commissioning planning & execution, and specifications documents.
Responsibilities
Design and engineer data center and computer room projects, prepare reports and specifications, and provide a very high level of technical leadership
Plan, design, and engineer chiller, CRAC/H, HVAC, air distribution, plumbing, piping, and fire protection systems
Perform calculations, equipment selection, equipment specification, system design, system layout, field investigation, and construction administration
Extensive project management activities:
Responsible for multiple concurrent projects through all phases; including, but not limited to, requirements gathering, design development, construction, and commissioning
Develop operating standards and procedures for new and existing data center mechanical support infrastructure
Lead regularly scheduled meeting to review status of all data center projects and discuss general and project issues
Manage new product evaluations and engineering evaluations of existing spaces
Support new business development by identifying resource requirements, proposing manpower requirements, and assist in write design scopes for client project proposals and presentations
Support marketing by assisting in the development of 'White Papers', blog posts, case studies, and services definition for brochures and advertising collateral
Effectively and personably be able to organize others supporting your efforts
Handle multiple projects at one time while maintaining client satisfaction
Perform all work with minimal supervision and coordinate with a quality assurance/quality control supervisory team
Interface with clients and attend meeting regularly
Apply skills to produce drawings consistent with client requirements, code compliance, and PTS' standards
Master company's drawing organization format and drawing standards
Conduct due diligence reports under supervision of the Engineer Manager and will comply with group and company standards and procedure
Communicate design concepts via sketches and renderings
Conduct field visits and write field observation reports
Plan and conduct field commissioning of mechanical systems
Estimate construction costs and evaluate feasibility of construction
Able to work overtime to meet project deadlines
Qualifications:
P.E. license in good standing, in one or more states
NCEES record in good standing or in process
BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering with approximately 3 years' experience in data center design engineering
Understanding of mechanical system design and construction requirements for data center facilities
Possess a strong awareness of current and emerging industry standards, vendors, and technologies as they relate to the data center facility infrastructure industry
Display an in-depth knowledge of data center cooling and ventilation systems including chillers, packaged HVAC systems, air distribution systems, heat rejection systems, exhaust, makeup and ventilation air systems
Display an in-depth knowledge of facility heating systems including central furnace systems, hydronic heating systems, central boiler plants, in-floor radiant heating, and heat exchangers
Display an in-depth knowledge of facility plumbing systems including sanitary drainage systems, water distribution systems, natural and LP gas distribution systems, fuel-oil distribution systems, and plumbing fixtures and water heating equipment
Though an in-depth knowledge of data center electrical systems (generator, UPS, lighting, power distribution, etc.) is not required, a general knowledge and understanding of these systems and their impact on mechanical systems is a must
Expertise in AutoCAD (version 2005 or better), MS Word, and MS Excel, as well as design and calculation software
Ability to coordinate with clients, engineers, architects, contractors, and consultants to analyze mechanical requirements & develop designs for both new and retrofit data center projects
Ability to coordinate with design and engineering resources to develop program requirements and project estimates for both new and retrofit office and light industrial projects
Possess strong record keeping skills as well as a good sense of coordination and follow through
Mastered reading and interpreting mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings and design documents
Possess detailed knowledge of specifications
Excellent verbal and writing skills
Have solid knowledge of codes and standards for his/her trade
Have knowledge of ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) construction costs
Able to work in the United States
Education:
BS or MS degree in electrical engineering discipline
LEED AP certification preferred, but not required.
Uptime Institute Accredited Tiers Designer (ATD) certification preferred, but not required.
Required License and or certifications:
Professional Engineer, licensed in NJ and/or NY, in good standing preferred.
