Job Summary:
Under direct supervision, play an integral role in supporting the institutional goal of providing superlative on-site visitor experiences that create powerful emotional connections with our diverse guests. Keep the Aquarium in a clean and safe condition. Work closely with other teams in a highly dynamic environment supporting both daytime operations and evening events. Serve in a variety of roles throughout both the main Aquarium and outbuildings supporting both staff and guests. Perform other duties as required.
Core Activities:
Perform general, routine custodial duties to include:
Dust, mop, vacuum
Polish hand railings, countertops, woodwork
Clean and maintain glass and acrylic windows, other viewing surfaces
Maintain and re-supply restrooms.
Empty trash receptacles, dispose trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash for proper disposal.
Clean and prep for night events (e.g., set up furniture, trash receptacles, event area cleaning, etc.).
Perform general routine custodial duties in office spaces (e.g., dust, vacuum, trash, kitchen, refrigerator, etc.).
Set up rooms and meeting spaces (e.g., move furniture, transport boxes in and outside of main facility)
Support other Operations Department workgroups, as well as other Guest Experience Departments (e.g., assist Admissions team with daily tasks, etc.).
Attend scheduled staff trainings and departmental meetings, as well as complete all required training assigned by Supervisors and/or MBA HR and Safety Departments ( e.g. Blood Born Pathogen, Chemical Safety, Cal Osha Safety, Window Cleaning Certifications, Sustainability Disposal, Emergency Clean Up).
Assist with mentoring incoming staff.
Engage guests throughout the Aquarium via various Guest Experience Operations activities.
Support guests, volunteers and other staff with safe and efficient exit, check-in, and re-entry procedures during an Emergency Evacuation.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Experience in hospitality, customer service and/or attractions industry
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
Experience working both independently and as a member of a team
Ability to sustain enthusiastic interactions with both guests and staff throughout each work shift
Experience working with diverse audiences
Ability to work indoors and out for the full duration of the scheduled shift
Ability/comfort proactively approaching guests
Ability to converse in another international language (Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, etc)
Ability to work alongside Teen Conservation Leader (TCL) students, Guide Volunteers
Experience working with multiple age groups, both adults and families
Ability to multitask and work positively with interruptions
Competency/experience with data entry, computers, and other communication technologies
Comfort with using/learning new technology
Adhere to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Attendance Policy and Service Standards, and the GE Image, Appearance and Uniform Standards
Strong communication skills on phones, radio and email
Ability to demonstrate support for the Monterey Bay Aquarium's mission
Ability to work within, and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium's Core Values
Available to work both weekdays and weekends, as well as holidays
