The Niche Editor is a highly collaborative and creative professional that manages the editorial strategy and production of the Arizona Daily Sun's special sections and Flag Live, northern Arizona's only alternative arts and culture publication. This position works closely with advertising representatives, page designers and freelance writers to drive growth and brand awareness through great stories and community engagement. The Niche Editor plays a key role in the success of the Daily Sun and will continue to find new ways to build toward a sustainable future.
Key Responsibilities
Write stories, briefs and editor's notes for the Arizona Daily Sun, Flag Live and special sections as needed
Maintain a small team of freelance writers and submit invoices to accounts payable
Edit every story that comes across desk and submit to the CMS, making sure to fulfill every article requirement (e.g. writing summaries, captions, uploading photos, etc.)
Manage Flag Live's social media profiles and presence with an emphasis on Instagram
Curate a newsletter every week, detailing the week's stories and things to do
Plan and execute the production of all special sections in accordance with the deadlines agreed upon by all involved parties
Work closely with the advertising representatives to make sure that all ad contracts are fulfilled
Organize ads and editorial content into a clean layout
Communicate vision to page designers and identify changes in early publication proofs
Coordinate print dates and shipping information with in-house production manager and printers
Upload e-editions for all special sections to our website
Work closely with teams on event implementation with duties including set-up/take-down and artist/partner management
Identify and develop opportunities informed by needs, mutual goals and community dynamics
Develop meaningful local contacts in arts and culture and keep finger on the pulse of the community
Additional projects and duties as assigned
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Minimum of two years of relevant experience in journalism, publishing, marketing or a related field
Thoughtful editorial judgment, writing skills (AP style) and an ability to create unique content that drives engagement
Excellent facilitation and interpersonal skills to work effectively and communicate with a wide variety of staff, writers and local nonprofit and business leaders
Ability to efficiently manage time and workload and follow through on a variety of tasks, assignments and projects
Passion for arts and culture and an eagerness to learn more
Strong community knowledge and a willingness to step out of comfort zone
Ability to anticipate, communicate and respond to issues with poise
Familiarity with Blox, Adobe inDesign and Google Suite a plus
Salary: $48,000-$50,000
