Position Overview: We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Controller to join our team in Washington, DC. This role is ideal for an Assistant Controller ready to advance into a Controller position or an Accounting Manager looking to transition into a Controller role within the non-profit sector.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all aspects of the organization's accounting functions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including financial statement preparation and analysis.
  • Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard financial assets.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with external auditors during annual audits and tax filings.
  • Monitor and analyze financial performance against budget, providing insights and recommendations to senior management.
  • Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Prepare financial reports for the Board of Directors and senior leadership, highlighting key metrics and financial health indicators.
  • Stay updated on accounting regulations and best practices within the non-profit sector, ensuring organizational compliance.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting; CPA certification preferred.
  • 8 - 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 4+ years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Experience in a non-profit organization strongly preferred; familiarity with fund accounting principles and reporting requirements
  • Grants accounting experience is a necessity: restricted funds and unrestricted funds.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop a team, promoting collaboration and high performance.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide strategic insights.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and advanced Excel skills.
