Job Summary



Reporting to the Seizure unit Chief Technologist and the Brain Institute Service Line Administrator, the reader will be responsible for the following: scanning of video EEG studies, sending alerts to designated team members, annotating studies based on clinical indication for monitoring, generating summary of past 24 hrs, and facilitating the tracking of quality and impact. Responsible for the technical operation of the laboratory performing clinical or research work; performs job functions following the "Guidelines for EEG and Long Term Neurodiagnostic Monitoring in Epilepsy” as set down by the American Society of Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists. Performs complex studies with no supervision. Is trusted by and regularly engages with the Neurology Department Epileptologost. 



Minimum Job Requirements




  • Graduate of an Electroneurodiagnostic Technology program accredited by Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation or equivalent formal training required.



  • Registered with the American Board of Registration of Registration of Electroneurodiagnostic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET).



  • 5 or more years of experience as Electroencephalographic Technologist II with emphasis in pediatrics, neonates and Intensive Care.


  • Passes all competencies associated with position as evaluated by our Epileptologist 


  • CPR: Healthcare Provider - in good standing throughout employment.



Job Specific Essential Duties:



  • A.      Scan all studies by 9.00 am every morning on weekdays and 10 am on weekends.


    B.      Send alerts in all monitored patients. Begin with criteria currently used for Corticare. These will be modified by the clinical team through ongoing feedback.  


    C.      Label or annotate to highlight events of interest based on clinical aim of the study. Specifically review events logged by the parents. Annotation criteria will evolve with ongoing feedback; examples to include:


                                     I.            NeuroICU Care: All alerts


                                   II.            Characterize known seizure disorder further.


                                                                  i.      Interictal epileptiform abnormalities. If they are very frequent, label examples of those that reflect state related changes or different distribution (focal location or generalized).


                                                                 ii.      Label seizure onset, type (tonic/clonic, myoclonic, absence, spasms, atonic), duration, localization.


                                                               iii.      Background slowing unrelated to sleep, asymmetry greater than 50% persisting over different head positions.


                                 III.            Rule out encephalopathy.


                                                                  i.      Slow poorly organized background


                                                                 ii.      Frequent spikes or spike wave discharges exceeding 20/min


                                                               iii.      Continuous spike discharges during sleep exceeding 50% of the record.


                                                               iv.      Repetitive runs of spikes or rhythmic discharges each lasting over a min


                                IV.            Differentiate epileptic from non-epileptic events:


                                                                   i.      Label all events logged by parents as being either epileptic or non-epileptic


                                                                 ii.      Interictal background and epileptiform abnormalities


    D.      Generate a summary of salient findings over past 24 hrs:


                                     I.            Alerts sent


                                   II.            Seizures captured #, type


                                 III.            Associated encephalopathy


                                IV.            Interictal epileptiform and/or background abnormalities


                                  V.            Non-epileptic events


                                VI.            Normal interictal, no events


    E.       Tracking performance: obtain feedback from clinical team and participate with the Chief Tech in ongoing quality improvement initiatives.



  • Performs EEG or Evoked Potential testing and updates in Cerner. Adapts methods and instrumentation to obtain optimal results based on history, clinical observation, and EEG findings.

  • Reviews current EEG Activity on Cerner video database.

  • Interacts with various computer programs to print out sample recordings from the original digital EEG data; edits data from the computer and prints out selected data for review by the Neurologist.

  • Takes specific instructions from the physician regarding electrode placement, Hyper vent and Cortic Stimulation.

  • Maintains equipment in clean operating condition and ensures safety of the patient at all times. Reports the need for any repairs within 24 hours.

  • Performs data retrieval, reduction operations and Video EEG records in a form suitable for interpretation by the physician including prescreening EEG and behavioral data.

  • Analyzes complex ictal and interictal features as well as artifacts encountered in standard EEG studies; defining segments for later analysis by the physician.

  • Performs all EEGs and Long Term Video-EEG Monitoring in the EEG Lab or Seizure Unit using the International 10-20 system as well as Supplementary Positions.

  • Performs ECOG to patients during specific OR procedures and performs subdural EEG from 64 - 228 electrodes.

  • Performs other specialized studies such as Functional Brain Stimulation and Mapping (direct cortical stimulation), ECS recordings and SPECT and PET Scan Studies.

  • Provides appropriate patient care and detailed observation of clinical manifestations during seizures and other patient emergency situations.

  • Prepares the data set montage, filters settings and performs dips to tell how many seizures.

  • Performs walking handoff with Technicians in providing critical patient data needed to support a high level of patient care.

  • Documents within the scope of practice all electronic medical record (EMR) meaningful use required fields in an effort to optimize utilization.

  • Participates in Lean initiative to improve processes for opportunities to deliver higher quality, cost effective care, with greater customer service, & which impact can be measured by way of metrics.

  • Utilizes Lean methodology to improve the family experience in the Brain Institute. Actively involved in continuously improving the patient experience and in the service recovery process.


Common Duties:


  • Maintains accountability by ensuring compliance thru timely completion of licensures, certifications, all competencies, health requirements (PPD, N95, Flu, etc.), and education requirements.

  • Maintains accountability and timekeeping expectations as outlined by MCHS Timekeeping and Attendance policy & procedures.  Ensures behavior is compliant with communication standards.

  • Ensures behavior meets and/or exceeds targeted service scores as measured by the Service Index and/or the internal departmental service survey.


 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


  • LTM and Evoked Potentials experience in the Operating Room monitoring preferred 

  • Experience in electronics and/or computer science is advantageous

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing

  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information

  • Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families and co-workers

  • Ability to interpret, adapt and react calmly under stressful conditions

  • Ability to problem solve to adapt standard clinical procedures to the individual client’s need

  • Ability to work well with others and the willingness to learn new procedures
