The Department

The Department of Criminal Justice and Social Work offers degree plans leading to the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Criminal Justice, the Master of Science in Criminal Justice, and the Bachelor of Social Work degrees. The department recently obtained approval to move forward with a Master of Social Work program. 

The Program

The Criminal Justice Program currently employs 5 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, and 3 Lecturers. The criminal justice programs serve traditional and non-traditional student populations with diverse backgrounds and professional interests. Students in criminal justice have opportunities to join academic and professional student organizations, learn from adjunct professors who currently hold leadership and practitioner positions in the criminal justice system, and engage in high-impact learning opportunities such as service-learning courses, internships, and work with faculty on research projects.

Summary

The University of Houston–Downtown Criminal Justice Program is seeking candidates for the non-tenure track position of Criminal Justice Lecturer and Field Placement (Internship) Coordinator to start in Fall 2025. The normal course load for a lecturer position is 5/5 (five 3-credit-hour courses each Fall and Spring). The course load for this position will be at least 3/3 (three 3-credit-hour courses each Fall and Spring); the successful candidate will receive course releases commensurate with the semesterly workload required to serve the Field Experience Coordinator role.

Coordinator Job Description:

Under the direction of the Director of Field Experience, the Lecturer/Coordinator will help run the operations of the criminal justice field experience program, which includes but is not limited to:


  • Recruits and maintains field placement sites, preparing and orienting students to the field experience process, meeting with and orienting students, and matching students with field placements

  • Troubleshoots field experience issues/concerns

  • As necessary, engages in field experience work during the winter break

  • As necessary, engages in compensated field experience work during the summer

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will teach in various modalities (in-person, online, hybrid, and/or hyflex). In addition, the hired individual will have completed a Master's degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a closely related field. The successful candidate must have 18 graduate-level hours in Criminal Justice or Criminology.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • A PhD in criminal justice or a closely related field

  • Prior professional employment in a criminal justice agency

  • Prior experience overseeing field experience (internship) or service-learning students
