PURPOSE SUMMARY.  Perform code enforcement duties, enforce local environmental solid waste ordinances and regulations, and increase public awareness of the importance of compliance to ensure a safe, sanitary and clean environment. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES. 

1. Patrol areas as assigned to enforce environmental laws and regulations such as the collection and disposal of solid waste.

  • Respond to inquiries and complaints regarding solid waste; weeds, trash, littering and junk; abandoned or inoperable vehicles.

  • Perform inspections and conduct investigations at illegal dump sites, dilapidated or junked vehicles, trash or weed accumulation and determine whether a violation has occurred.

  • Issue warnings and/or citations for non-compliance.

  • Initiate follow-up visits and inspections to ensure compliance.

  • Complete case reports before end of shift and maintain reoccurring reports on enforcement activities.

2. Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding code violations.

3. Prepare formal complaints and charges for criminal court actions against violators of County ordinances pertaining to violations.

  • Prepare case files.

  • Prepare written reports and take pictures.

  • Testify in court proceedings.

4. Provide options for mediation between neighbors in resolving code related issues.

5. Perform special projects and activities.  Give presentations on code regulations at school presentations and other County events.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES. Other duties may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS. 

A.  Education.  High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

B. Experience.  A minimum of one (1) year full-time work experience in code enforcement; enforcing environmental health laws, regulations, and ordinances; law enforcement; or relevant military experience. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred to effectively communicate with citizens when responding to calls in the community.

C. Education/Experience substitution.  In accordance with County Policy.

D. Licenses/Certifications.  Valid Class D Driver’s License.  Must maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with County policy.

E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver’s license record, etc.).  Background and driver’s license record check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Must have knowledge of ordinances, safety procedures, principles and practices of code enforcement and compliance; and performing daily vehicle inspections.

Must have the skills to interpret and apply County ordinances relating to code enforcement; prepare clear, concise, and complete written reports; use proper judgement in determining the degree of compliance with various laws, ordinances and regulations; and work independently while recognizing issues that should be referred to the supervisor.

Must have the ability to use computers; operate two-way radio systems utilizing 10 code; perform basic research on identified properties; tactfully and impartially interpret and explain the provisions of code ordinances; handle difficult situations using professionalism and tact; effectively communicate with a diverse cultural community; and establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.

Compensation Range

$16.00 - $24.26
