Responsibilities

What you'll be challenged to do:

TranSystems is seeking to hire an experienced Senior Resident Engineer/Construction Corridor Manager/Team Leader to join our Southwest Chicago (Lisle). The ideal candidate will have the ability to apply intensive and diversified principles and practices to moderate to complex projects, exercising sound engineering judgment.  The Senior Resident Engineer works independently making project specific decisions, solving engineering problems and methods, and coordinating all project work efforts. This position may require frequent travel, as well as all necessary effort and time required to meet established deadlines.  Proven ability to work in a team environment and share experience and expertise with teammates is ideal.

 

General Duties & Responsibilities include the following:  


  • Lead a team under the Program Management Practice Leader Division in the Southwest Chicago Office (Lisle). This would include staffing plans, mentoring staff, and day to day tasks to manage the team.

  • Perform personnel duties for the team, such as setting performance success plans, evaluations, providing feedback, training, recommending promotions, raises, and general supervisor responsibilities.

  • Attend Team and Division staffing meetings and work with the Office Director, Practice Leaders, Division Leaders, other Team Leaders, and other Project Managers to the balance workload of the team and staffing plans for projects.

  • Participate in the recruiting and hiring process for adding new staff. This includes scheduling and conducting interviews with select applicants and negotiating employment terms with potential employees.

  • Direct the onboarding process for new employees on the team which includes obtaining equipment, training, introductions to team members, coworkers, and TranSystems, and conducting periodic check in meetings.

  • Plans and develops engineering projects with unique problems. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation, and development of novel concepts and approaches.

  • Organizes and develops a project team to execute specific phases or aspects of a project such as program and construction management. Must be able to delegate.

  • Develop and prepare presentations to clients.

  • Manage workloads and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.

  • Manage large scale construction engineering projects.

  • Effectively communicate with team members, clients, contractors and project stakeholders.

  • Supervises the project engineering team which may include Engineer Interns, Construction Technicians, and Construction Engineers.

  • Coordinates project work with the Materials Coordinator and Survey Manager.

  • Serves as the client liaison in meetings with other agencies, consultants, contractors and the general public related to projects as needed.

  • Provide overall quality assurance for construction contracts.

  • Exercises sound engineering judgement.

  • Identify and spot technical problems in the construction process and perform constructability reviews.

  • Keep an up-to-date understanding of all legal obligations and contract terms to prevent project delays.

  • Manage and assist field inspection and project documentation.

  • Perform various construction management duties, such as budget management, scheduling, material procurement, and labor planning.

  • Evaluates, selects and adapts standard techniques, procedures and criteria to meet project requirements.

  • Devises unique approaches to encountered problems.

  • Assures the project meets quality control and quality assurance guidelines.

  • Assist with business development strategies for clients, projects, and organizations.

  • Maintain professional, technical, and supervisory skills by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

  • Limited national travel.

  • Will have supervisory responsibilities for day-to-day activities with staff.

Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:


  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.

  • Minimum 10 years of related experience.

  • Team management and Client management experience.

  • Ability to manage engineering staff.

  • Ability to work independently and manage to deadlines, solve problems and deliver in a high pressure, fast-paced environment.

  • Positive, can-do attitude.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.

  • Strong Communication Skills – Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.  Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or Boards of Directors.




  • Math Ability – Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.




  • Reasoning Ability – Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.




  • Computer Skills - Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and various engineering software systems depending on engineering discipline.



 

What we’d prefer for you to bring to our firm:


  • IDOT/Tollway program management and construction management experience.

  • Prior experience as a Resident Engineer.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, construction and field assignments can be severe (i.e. Airport noise, inside factories, construction equipment, jack hammers, etc).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hand and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone keyboard.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and drive a car.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
