Nurse Coordinator




The Pediatric Gastroenterology RN Nurse Leader is a licensed nurse who provides competent, compassionate nursing care to patients and families as well as coordinating the nursing program and activities for the Pediatric Gastroenterology Division. In collaboration with the Administrative Manager and Clinical Chief, the Nurse Leader coordinates and oversees the activities of the Pediatric Gastroenterology nursing team. In addition, they are responsible for the training and oversight of the daily activities of the clinical support staff.


The RN Nurse Leader is accountable for facilitating excellence in patient care delivery within nursing scope of practice, providing operating efficiencies and ensuring compliance with departmental procedures and protocols as well as hospital and regulatory policies and practices. Drawing on a broad understanding of clinical and hospital practices and policies and displaying a high degree of initiative and independent judgment, the RN Nurse Leader will continually assess and direct a wide range of clinical and programmatic activities related to operations, long-range planning, practice growth and hospital relations. In collaboration with the practice Leadership, the role includes participating in the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of procedures, protocols, activities, workflows and nurse scheduling to enhance efficiency, safety and productivity.


The RN works collaboratively with physicians and other staff members to ensure a quality-based, customer focused and efficient flow of work throughout the ambulatory practice. The RN serves as a resource person for the nursing team, physicians, fellows and the clinical/clerical support staff.



Patient Care Management - position provides direct care and organizes the provision of care by members of the nursing team and medical assistants



§ Provides and maintains a climate in which effective and therapeutic patient focused care is assured throughout the patient's visit.


§ Provides culturally sensitive age- appropriate nursing care to patients and families within scope of practice including the administration of medications in accordance with hospital policies.


§ Participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care and treatment plans; identifies patient care needs and utilizes nursing resources appropriately.


§ Supervises and works with the nursing team to triage patient phone calls, laboratory call-backs, manage EPIC In Basket and renew prescription refill requests


§ Responsible for the coordination, quality and execution of patient care activities such as nurse visits including documentation, nurse triage.


§ Serves as a clinical resource for practice staff processing prior authorizations to obtain necessary medical information as needed.


§ §Works with MGH and outside pharmacies when issues of procuring essential medications and supplies arise


§ Is a resource to the team on all matters related to patient care and nursing practice.


§ Partners with the Pediatric Ambulatory Nurse Leader and MGH Ambulatory Management team on matters related to nursing practice and standards of care


§ Performs other duties as assigned.


Nursing Team Support and Management




§ Participates and leads in the interviewing process of all nursing staff including RN's and medical assistants.


§ Actively participates in department and hospital committees as requested.


§ Manages and provides direction for the activities of nursing staff


§ Helps train MAs and other support staff and helps guide their day-to-day activities


§ Promotes the clinical development of the nursing team.


§ Assists with the delegation responsibilities and authorities to appropriate staff and develops systems for effective follow up.


§ Plans, directs and participates in regularly scheduled nursing meetings to share information and problem solve with nursing staff.


§ Supervises staff RN and medical assistant competencies according to the departmental protocols, ensuring competencies are documented in accordance with the Joint Commission standards.


§ Randomly audits nursing documentation to ensure compliance with documentation standards and billing requirements


§ Consults with the Clinical Chief and Administrative Manager regarding any performance issues and assists in developmental plans to improve performance.


§ Provides input to annual nursing and medical assistant evaluations and participates with the Administrative Manager in annual evaluation meetings.


Operations Management




§ Maintains a safe environment for patient/staff while implementing daily operational activities.


§ Directs day-to-day activities of all nursing staff and the medical assistants.


§ Establishes the weekly nursing staff coverage for the department including arranging for coverage for unplanned absences and urgent practice needs


§ Works collaboratively with the Administrative Manager to approve staff vacation and time off requests


§ Helps define standards of excellence for patient care; participates in improvement of patient care services in a cost-effective way.


§ Interprets and enforces with staff and others the appropriate use of equipment, supplies, and physical facilities.


§ Maintains the policies and procedure manuals, protocol orders and other related documents in the nursing office, team room and on the shared PEDI GI drive. Updates on an annual basis or as changes occur.


§ Works collaboratively with the department Clinical Director and Administrative Manager on clinical operations


§ Ensures Excellence Every Day initiatives are implemented and maintained


§ Works with the Administrative Manager in ensuring emergency preparedness and adherence to compliance with JCAHO, OSHA, and Hospital guidelines

§ Participates in the Division's Quality Program as a triad member responsible for reviewing quality data, leading quality improvement initiatives and attending the MGHfC Quality and Safety Meetings


§ Works collaboratively with the practice and MGHfC Leadership.

§ Remains up to date with Joint Commission Standards and Magnet Re-designation requirements through emails and advisories from the MGH Ambulatory Management and regular meetings sponsored by the MGH Ambulatory team and Pediatric Ambulatory Nurse Group



Qualifications

Qualifications:

§ Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required


§ 3-5 years of experience required


§ 1-2 years of managerial experience preferred
