Job Description:

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician Certified or Trainee to join our team. Under general pharmacist supervision, coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of dispensing areas. Under general supervision of technician supervisor, carries out activities supportive of development, coordination, and training of assigned areas. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment. This position will work 8.5 hours shifts, starting at 8:00 am or 8:30 am, Monday - Friday, no holidays or weekends.


The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire at either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee classification, or Pharmacy Technician, Certified, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Duties to include:


  • Process prescriptions in an Ambulatory-based pharmacy system
    • Read label for accuracy and correct as needed.
    • Label and package the correct medication.
    • Notate appropriate documentation of study materials.
    • Sign appropriate documents in correct logbooks.
    • Coordinate services with other UIHC Pharmacies.
  • Proficiently use an Investigational Electronic system to manage inventory, dispense medications, build electronic medication orders.
  • Work closely with Investigational Drug Service staff and interdisciplinary staff to accurately fulfill orders with a high level of attention to detail and focus on superior customer service.
  • Provide patient/customer service. Communicate with the patients, study monitors and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines.
    • Determine waiting/pick-up time.
    • Triage tasks to appropriate team. Recognize workflow patterns for effective triage of responsibilities.
    • Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.
  • Compound sterile products according to USP 797 and USP 800 standards.
  • Performs maintenance activities for compounding equipment & designated area.
    • Assist with cleaning & decontamination of PEC in accordance with SOPs.
    • Assist with upkeep & cleaning of other equipment and maintain appropriate records.
  • Maintain temperature monitoring system records for received shipments and for investigational medications stored in the pharmacy and in other locations throughout the hospital.
  • Order, receive and document product shipments appropriately.
  • Generate and/or maintain (includes filing) appropriate records related to studies.
  • Perform inventory maintenance activities, ensuring inventory is completed according to policy
    • Conduct weekly & monthly inventory counts as instructed by senior technician/pharmacists.
    • Audit records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances.
    • Resolve discrepancies on issuance forms.
  • Participate in site qualification visits and other required sponsor training.
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
  • Assist in on-the-job training of new technicians.
  • Coordinate technical activities with other members of team.
  • Complete and maintain compliance with all competencies and educational requirements, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Subject training, as well as sponsor specific training.







  • Certified Technician Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program


  • Trainee Technician Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience:
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.


  • Special Qualifications:

    • Experience with Public Contact/Customer Service

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations
    • Experience with inventory maintenance activities
    • Experience working in team environment
    • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
    • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs
    • Experience working in environment requiring accuracy
    • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment.
    • Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level
