University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the Tele-sitter software
Maintains visual observation at all times
Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room
Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the appropriate care to the patient population based on the patients individualized treatment plan as delegated by the RN
Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment
Arranges meal break times with nurse and informs nurse prior to leaving monitoring station for any reason so that relief may be provided to ensure constant patient observation
Provides patient with explanations as necessary, but does not counsel or provide opinions
Demonstrates behaviors in line with Service Excellence
Seeks help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others
Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues
Assures patient environment safety
Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to Charge Nurse
Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs
Communicates and interacts with patients, visitors, and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative relationships
Implements the plan of care under the direction of the registered nurse, providing appropriate care with regard to patient's condition and age
Observes patients for changes in physical condition throughout their stay, and reports to registered nurse
Assembles equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by nurses or physicians
Performs simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as assigned (i.e. enemas, collecting specimens, preoperative preparation of skin)
Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit
Implements measures to prevent potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents in consultation with the registered nurse
Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality
Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy
Assists staff during emergencies, within the scope of practice
Performs other projects and tasks as assigned
Participates in unit staff meetings and in-services
Complies with annual competency review guidelines
Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations
Adheres to UIHC policies regarding personal conduct, including: follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal appearance, attendance and punctuality
Percent of Time: 50% - 20hours per week
Schedule: Day shifts, every other weekend, every other holiday
Location: University Campus, Iowa City, IA
