The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

The person hired for this position will join the Personal Safety Division and will be part of a team of engineers who design and develop innovative and high-quality solutions for our customers to protect people. The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) developed by this team are Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR), which are electromechanical hardgoods products and systems. These products will utilize various forms of mechanical systems, electronics-based hardware, sensors and software technologies. As a Product Development Specialist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most creative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

• Designing, developing, and commercializing new electromechanical hardgoods respiratory filters, products, and systems.


• Supporting a global hardgoods lab with various testing, experiments, maintenance, repair, calibration, and hazard reviews.


• Planning and managing work to meet project plans, timelines, and deliverables.


• Communicating progress and issues to key stakeholders to ensure alignment and support.


• Developing clear and concise technical specifications and documentation.


• Having a hands-on approach to creating physical functional objects; performing all steps required in taking a design from concept through production, from component selection, schematic capture, material selection, design and development, bill of materials generation, ECO processes, prototype assembly, debug, test and shepherding through production, and post-launch support.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

• Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution


• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in an Engineering or R&D role in a private, public or military environment.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Possess a bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in Electrical, Mechanical, Materials Science or other engineering discipline from an accredited institution


• Minimum eight (8) years of experience in product development, material selection and design of electro-mechanical systems and related device interactions, or electronics-based products


• Experience working with mechanical components, injection molding, material selection and multi-component assembly design


• Experience with Rapid Prototyping and 3D printers, experience in manufacturing engineering, process or product engineering


• Comfortable with software (real time embedded systems) and tool languages such as Python (or others) which prove useful in laboratory work and data gathering and analysis.


• Experience with Modeling and Simulation tools for and in product development process


• Skilled in the art of efficient problem solving when minimal information is available.

• In addition to managing ground up designs, comfortable with adopting and improving designs of others.


• Understanding of intellectual property and the tools to monitor the state of the art.

• Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations.


• Candidate should have a "hands on, self-starter" orientation to their work, have broad interests and willingness to explore new areas well outside conventionally established ‘electronic’ or ‘mechanical’ engineering roles.


• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Applicable to US Applicants Only:The expected compensation range for this position is $137,439 - $167,981, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position.
