Modern European History Guest Faculty Position 2024-2025
Rank: Guest Faculty
Tenure Information: Non-Tenure Track
Job Description
Sarah Lawrence College invites applications for a one-year, half-time guest faculty in 20th-century European history with a focus on political mass movements (teaching two courses in the academic year 2024/5, either two in one semester, or one each semester), to begin Fall 2024. We are particularly interested in candidates specializing in the social, cultural and material practices of totalitarian parties and comparable political movements. While a focus on any area of Europe is welcome, preference will be given to candidates with a focus on East Central Europe and/or Southern Europe.
The successful applicant will be expected to teach two courses, one in the fall and one in the spring or two in either semester, that together will provide an introduction to political mass movements during the 20th century. We welcome creative, interdisciplinary, and transnational approaches to the study of people's everyday lives under totalitarian regimes. Courses could address fields such as the mobilization of the Italian population under Italian fascism, the social and cultural history of Francoist Spain, the organization of Fascist empires (whether in Europe or Africa), or the material culture of Soviet Russia. Candidates with a record of effective college-level teaching and experience guiding undergraduate research projects will be preferred.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae; a cover letter addressing their teaching and scholarship; a short writing sample; and syllabi for the proposed undergraduate courses (two seminars, or a lecture and a seminar). In addition, applicants should provide the names and contact information for two professional references.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
Compensation for this position is on a per-course basis, contingent on teaching experience.
