Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The primary purpose of the Psychology and Neuroscience Department is to provide excellent education, research and service in the field. This goal breaks down into four important components: 1) to teach psychology and neuroscience to undergraduates in a manner that will introduce them vigorously to its broad scope; 2) to offer scientific and professional training to graduate students in the areas of behavioral and integrative neuroscience, clinical, cognitive, developmental, quantitative, and social psychology; 3) to carry out cutting-edge research in these areas, and 4) to provide consulting and administrative support services to the science and profession of psychology as well as to the university, the community, the state, and the nation.The Department consists of six programs: behavioral and integrative neuroscience; clinical psychology; cognitive psychology; developmental psychology; quantitative psychology, and social psychology. Each program is designed to acquaint the student thoroughly with the theoretical and research content of the specialty and to provide training in the research skills needed to become a competent and creative investigator. In addition, the programs focus on the development of appropriate professional skills.The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience ranks 2nd in the College in grant funding with over $12 million annually in grant expenditures and approximately $20 million annually in expenditures from all funds. The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience has the largest undergraduate major in the College of Arts and Sciences with approximately 1500 majors, and one of the largest graduate Ph.D. programs with approximately 120 graduate students. The Department is also home to four community clinics which generate fee revenue (Adult Clinic, Anxiety Clinic, Child and Family Clinic, Couples Clinic), known collectively as the UNC Psychology and Neuroscience Community Clinic (the Clinic).


Position Summary:

This position provides event management, communication, and administrative support to the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, and to its six affiliated Programs.Event management responsibilities include coordinating participant availability, scheduling dates/times, extending invitations, tracking RSVPs, and locating and reserving space for 15 to 20 departmental and program annual events and/or series, some of which are comprised of 10 to 20 individual events, for a total of up to 100 programming days per year. Other event management responsibilities include purchasing event supplies, coordinating with event vendors (caterers, hosting facilities, etc.) to provide appropriate supplies and amenities, collaborating with departmental and program finance teams to provide expense reports and transaction data, and providing day-of support for events, including set up, breakdown, and vendor coordination.Communication duties include creating and distributing printed and electronic marketing materials for departmental events, composing, scheduling, and sending announcements and reminders for scheduled events, developing and publishing electronic content for the department marketing display, and updating Departmental and Program websites.Administrative support responsibilities include processing requests for use of visitor parking spaces and conference rooms, purchasing supplies, making copies for Program or Faculty needs, distributing department mail and maintaining mailroom supplies and organization, and supervising administrative support work study students.This position also serves as a backup to the Executive Assistant in managing the Department Chair's schedule and communications.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related office experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.


Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The successful Program Coordinator applicant must have the ability to interact positively with diverse groups including faculty and staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and external stakeholders. This role will bear responsibility for the success of internal and external events; therefore, excellent written and verbal communication skills, a high level of professionalism, and confidentiality are critical. The successful applicant will have exceptional information processing, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, as well as strong attention to detail, excellent time management, and be able to implement effective organizational systems. The ability to multi-task, work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain calm in a fast paced or high pressure situation are essential to success in this position. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, website management platforms, and design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud) is required.

Experience in a fast paced environment.


Special Physical/Mental Requirements :

Ability to move/lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
