Instructional & Classroom Support Tech 1 - Applied Physics
Salary: $22.84 per hour
Classification: Part-time
Reports to: Applied Physics Faculty

Olympic College is recruiting to fill a permanent part time hourly Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 3 position for the Applied Physics program in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS.) The position will provide instructional support to faculty, instruct students in laboratory exercises, coordinate with faculty and staff in the Apprentice Program in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. This position coordinate functions related to the Applied Physics instructional program including classroom media, stockroom, equipment repair shop, laboratory support and maintenance, and management of hazardous materials, following all safety procedures.Essential Functions





  • Inspect, test, adjust and repair scientific and laboratory equipment used for lecture demonstrations and lab exercises.

  • Works with faculty to develop scientific instructional programs, demonstration models and laboratory procedures and experiments and modify textbooks, lab directions, equipment and lab processes to address changes to the physics curriculum.

  • Help design, construct and test equipment used for lecture demonstrations and laboratory experiments.

  • Assist faculty and students with assigned experiments in the lab in accordance with defined safety protocols.

  • Develop and maintain a computerized equipment and parts inventory.

  • Evaluates equipment specifications and makes purchase recommendations to the assigned Fiscal Specialist utilizing certified Small Businesses as defined by the federal contract with PSNS.

  • Consult with faculty and other electronics professionals and sources to assess textbook and laboratory text modifications

  • Study and evaluate new trends and developments on the latest equipment and laboratory procedures.

  • Provide training for students and faculty on equipment upgrades and changes, assisting new faculty with learning the lab experiments and procedures.

  • May teach the laboratory portion of selected classes

  • Perform other related duties as required

    Minimum Qualifications


  • Two (2) years-experience in a scientific laboratory or similar setting

  • Basic computer competency


  • Preferred Qualifications


  • Three years' experience with small electronics repair and maintenance, including test apparatus like desktop power supplies and oscilloscopes.

  • Two years' experience repairing and maintaining electromechanical devices, including sensors such as gyroscopes, accelerometers, and LVDTs.

  • One year's experience with measurement and other test devices and associated processes used with ships, aircraft, missiles, spacecraft or similar systems.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows applications

    Terms of EmploymentHourly employees must work 480 hours in a rolling six-month period to become eligible for health benefits. Hourly employees must work 70 hours in any five months for two consecutive years to become eligible for retirement. This is an hourly position scheduled to work up to 18 hours per week, with an hourly rate of $22.84. They are not initially eligible for benefits upon hire but could qualify for the following: Deferred Compensation Program (DRS) retirement savings plan, TIAA supplemental retirement savings plan, sick leave, paid holidays, AFLAC, space available tuition waiver, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), fitness center, reduced rate, and priority consideration on-site childcare on a space available basis.
    Conditions of Employment


  • Must be able to gain security clearance to work in a controlled industrial area, including a federal criminal background check and proof of identity and documentation of U.S. citizenship with either a U.S. Passport or certified U.S. birth certificate, or N-550 Certificate of Naturalization.

  • The employee may be required to lift and carry supplies and equipment of up to 30 pounds.

  • This is a part-time position that requires punctual and regular attendance. Flexible work hours may be required to accommodate both morning and afternoon work assignments.

  • This position is in a classroom and/or shop environment at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS). The employee may be required to move across PSNS, up to a half mile in an industrial setting to reach the job site.

  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position.
