Job Summary:

The Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology invites applications for a tenure track, nine-month Assistant Professor faculty position specializing in sustainability of natural resources, broadly defined. The incumbent must demonstrate interest or expertise in excellent mentoring of graduate or undergraduate students from at-risk, first-generation or underserved communities in innovated scholarship to advance the sustainable use and management of natural resources (e.g., pulp and timber, biodiversity, hunting and gathering by indigenous peoples, recreation, water). We seek a candidate with interest in collaborating across disciplines, securing extramural funding, partnering with tribal/state/federal natural resource agencies, and achieving national and international scholarly prominence.

The successful candidate should have a background in the sustainable use and management of natural resources, for example with a focus on integration of community concerns (e.g. Traditional indigenous life ways), treaty obligations, and contemporary management. We are interested in hiring an individual that uses rigorous, state-of-the-art, disciplinary tools to address the ecological, economic, and cultural issues of sustainability of natural resources to address critical and timely issues such as forest resilience in the face of the urgency of climate change, human influences, integration of traditional ecological knowledge, and environmental justice. The focus of this position is on field-based measurements, but expertise in advanced quantitative methods or data-model linkages are encouraged.

We are seeking candidates trained in ecology and dedicated to applying their skills to make develop scholars and leaders in environment and natural resources conservation among at-risk, first generation and/or underserved communities. The incumbent will create a vibrant research program, mentor undergraduates, graduate students and trainees, teach and make meaningful contributions to our department's teaching mission, and engage with natural resource decision-makers. The Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is internationally known for its research, teaching and outreach, and we are eager to welcome a new colleague to work and collaborate with us.

Responsibilities:

Develop and carry out a vigorous externally funded research program and publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. The focus of that research program is the choice of the successful candidate, and flexible as long as it pertains to sustainability of natural resources. Examples of research topics include sustainability of forest resource in the face of ecological, cultural influences, traditional ecological knowledge, and/or political influence; but we welcome applications from sustainability researchers who work in other systems (e.g., grasslands, wetlands). The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funding. Research collaborations with other faculty in our department and across campus are encouraged.

Teach graduate and undergraduate students, commensurate with college expectations and consistent with the teaching loads of the department. Recruit and mentor students from at-risk, first generation and/or underserved communities and promote their development and success in a collaborative environment. The incumbent will contribute substantially to instruction of at least one core course in our undergraduate curriculum. They will also teach a second course that advances the broader instructional mission of the Department of Forest & Wildlife Ecology and College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Course topics will depend on interests and Department needs. This second course should focus on the candidate's area of expertise.

Contribute to outreach and service functions of the department, college, university, and professional societies.

Contribute to programs aimed at increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the department, college, and university. Promote an inclusive and diverse climate within our campus and associated communities.
