Job Description Summary:
The City of Columbia is looking for dedicated and community-focused individuals to join our team as Park Safety Officers. In this role, you will be a visible presence in our city’s parks and trails, ensuring safety and security for all visitors. As a Park Safety Officer, you will conduct law enforcement duties, respond to incidents, and assist in protecting lives and property in these recreational areas.

Key Responsibilities:

• Patrol city parks and trails to detect and respond to criminal activity and potential hazards.
• Assist the Parks and Recreation Department with event security and administrative duties.
• Participate in law enforcement training and maintain necessary certifications and licensure.
• Provide court testimony as required.
• Prepare and maintain accurate records and documentation.
• Work collaboratively with team members and attend regular meetings.

Qualifications:

• Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree or two years of college in Criminal Justice, Park Management, Psychology, Sociology, or related fields is preferred.
• Licenses/Certifications:
  • Class A Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • CPR certification.

Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
• Proficiency in operating law enforcement vehicles and equipment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to make sound decisions in high-pressure situations.
• Skilled in time management, problem-solving, and report preparation.
• Ability to maintain professional composure during stressful interactions and provide exceptional customer service.

Work Environment:

• Outdoor Work: Expect frequent outdoor patrols in parks and trails, often in various weather conditions (extreme heat or cold).
• Physical Demands: Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently. Walking, standing, climbing, and other physical activities will be required.
• Exposure to Risks: Officers may encounter hostile individuals and must be prepared to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.

Schedule:
This position requires variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Specific shift hours will be discussed during the interview process.
