Job Description:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is looking for an X-Ray Crystallography Manager.  The X-ray Crystallography Manager maintains the daily operation of the small-molecule X-ray facility. Offers technical consultation to crystal sample preparation as well as routine maintenance and repairs of equipment stored in the facility to support the teaching and research program of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. 
This position ensure continuous operation of the small-molecule X-ray facility, handles operational budget and all financial transactions associated with the use of services offered by the facility. Provides technical support to the instructional and research mission of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Offers graduate-level course on the principles of X-ray crystallography.
This position coordinates with faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate research assistants, graduate teaching assistants, instructors, Electronic Shop, departmental administration, and other units within and outside of OU to facilitate instructional, research, and development at OU as well as other institutes nation wide.


Duties may include, but not limited to:



  • Collects crystallographic data for routine and difficult (fragile, small, air sensitive, and temperature sensitive) samples.

  • Organizes and effectively manages sample processing for optimal facility utilization.

  • Organizes and effectively manages NMR/EPR sign-up and scheduling policy.

  • Ensures that operators are properly trained and promotes continued improvements in abilities of all users.

  • Performs routine maintenance and repair of instrumentation, and provides routine care and maintenance of laboratory and office computers.

  • Utilizes expert knowledge in appropriate software and hardware to effectively operate instrumentation for data collection and structure solving.

  • Keeps current on recent advances in crystallography and effectively communicates such advances to appropriate members of the department.

  • Supervise hands-on use by researchers.

  • Ensures that operators are properly trained and promotes continued improvements in abilities of all users.

  • Coordinate instrument acquisition planning and participates in preparation of proposals for new X-ray equipment.

  • Provides X-ray crystallography expertise in support of research proposals by other faculty and staff.

  • Provides instruction on the use of the department’s diffractometer and crystallographic software.

  • Supports faculty in the instruction of crystallographic methods.

  • Performs related duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position

Required Education and Experience: Master's degree in related field, AND:



  • 12 months related research experience.


Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 72 months of related experience in lieu of the Master's degree for a total of 84 months of related experience.

  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty, and staff.



  • Able to supervise students and communicate directions and expectations effectively.



  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information.



  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines.



  • Able to produce reports and complete work within deadlines.
