Located in the beautiful Fraser Valley just east of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is a fully accredited public university that enrolls approximately 15,000 students annually. UFV has campuses and locations in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, and Hope, and a growing presence in Chandigarh, India.
UFV is large enough to offer variety, yet small class sizes allow you to get to know your instructors and learn in a hands-on environment. We provide over 100 programs, including three masters degrees, 21 bachelors degrees with majors, minors, and extended minors in more than 35 subject areas, four graduate certificates, and more than a dozen trades and technology programs.
On 85 acres at the Canada Education Park in Chilliwack, UFV has a LEED Gold-certified facility featuring a striking atrium, stunningly large classrooms, state-of-the-art science and computer labs, a fully equipped dental clinic, nursing stations, a library, a bookstore, a cafeteria, a black box theatre, a human performance lab that includes an EEG lab, environmental chamber, and teaching lab and an Indigenous Gathering Place. UFVs Agriculture Centre of Excellence is located on the Chilliwack campus at Canada Education Park. It features two polyethene greenhouses, a barn livestock area, milking area, poultry area, and swine area and a greenhouse with a multi-wall polycarbonate construction that provides a strong thermal rating and high energy efficiency. The height of the greenhouse allows it to retain the CO2 rather than venting it as excess heat. Located next door to the new UFV building at Canada Education Park in Chilliwack, BC, UFV's Trades and Technology Centre features shops and kitchens equipped with top-of-the-line equipment to support programs that provide hands-on, job-focused technology and skill training.
The successful candidate will explore and perform research on animal production and advise farmers on best practices in sustainable and profitable livestock production. Additional responsibilities will include serving on appropriate departmental, faculty, and university committees, participating in outreach activities related to agriculture and agricultural education, and engaging with industry and community stakeholders.
We are looking for applicants who share our passion for and commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching in a student-centred environment. Applicants must successfully integrate their scholarship into their teaching and have experience providing high-quality services to communities and industry (e.g., extension). We are also looking for individuals with skills and experience in livestock sectors.
We are seeking a collegial, energetic, and innovative individual who has successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level and who communicates effectively with students; is firmly committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion in and out of the classroom; can instruct across a range of the undergraduate courses offered by the department; and can contribute to the ongoing renewal of the Agriculture curriculum to keep pace with evolving sector practices and needs. A capacity to teach across traditional disciplinary boundaries (particularly in business) and to incorporate Indigenous viewpoints into the curriculum and department would be beneficial. Experience teaching international students is beneficial since UFV is dedicated to supporting and engaging international students.
Experience with technology-supported education (such as hybrid and online) is preferred. The ideal candidate will be able to work well in groups and be interested in creative interdisciplinary teaching methods. Applicants will have a good track record as practitioners commensurate with their experience and the ability to build and transfer those experiences into applied learning opportunities for students.
The selected applicant will be expected to contribute to advancing professional practice through student-led inquiry and scholarship related to the agriculture industry. The chosen candidate will be instrumental in establishing a cutting-edge animal science curriculum creating a pathway for students from the Livestock Diploma to new and existing Bachelor's programmes. This role demands academic achievement, practical expertise, and a strong desire to teach and develop a best-in-practice curriculum. A terminal degree in Livestock/Animal Science with a preference for a poultry specialization is required for the role. ABD candidates may be considered if a Ph.D. is earned prior to the start date.
