The TRIO Upward Bound Counselor/Tutor is responsible for providing comprehensive academic, career, and personal counseling to eligible high school students, preparing them for post-secondary education. This role involves offering tutoring support, advising on college admissions, financial aid, and career planning, while fostering essential skills for academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Academic Counseling:
    • Provide individual and group counseling to students, helping them navigate academic challenges and set educational goals.
    • Monitor and maintain GPA, credit checks, and overall academic performance records for all program participants.
  • Tutoring and Instruction:
    • Offer tutoring in core subjects, including math, science, English, and social studies, ensuring students are well-prepared for post-secondary academic challenges.
    • Develop and implement instructional materials and activities that engage students and support their learning.
  • Career and College Preparation:
    • Advise students on college admissions processes, including applications, essays, and financial aid opportunities.
    • Assist with career planning, helping students explore various career paths and educational opportunities.
  • Program Support and Chaperoning:
    • Act as a chaperon for program outings, field trips, and out-of-state travel, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants.
    • Monitor hallways and assist with bus duty as needed to maintain a safe and efficient program environment.
  • Assessment and Documentation:
    • Administer assessment instruments as required by the program proposal and record results for documentation purposes.
    • Compile and submit reports on student progress and program effectiveness, aligning with program objectives.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree is required for this position, along with strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • A genuine passion for working with educational programs designed for disadvantaged youth in communities with low-income, first-generation high school students is essential.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications is also advised.
