Job Description:

My client is a well-established, privately held leader in the development of sensor-based handheld custom-engineered devices for utilization in the Energy Market Sector.

They are located in the greater Boston area.

This is a unique challenge for a hardware-oriented Director of Engineering to provide operational oversight and guidance of a team of Electrical, Mechanical, Optical & Software Engineers, a Physical Scientist & Production staff. The ideal candidate has already been a change agent at a small to medium size company where the changes made had to be integrated with care.

Imminent regulatory changes have created the need to adapt the corporate culture in preparation of vast global business opportunities that could double their sales within 2-3 years.

The Director of Engineering will be asked to instill a greater sense of teamwork & accountability while integrating best practices to enable the creation of innovative, high-functioning custom prototypes and taking them through to volume production in an efficient, scalable fashion.

Key responsibilities: Lead individuals & working groups to ensure timely deliverables such as:
  1. New concept & prototype development (on-time and within budget)
  2. Planned product and software enhancements/upgrades
  3. Scale MVP & engineering prototypes to full production
  4. Work with C-level Mgt. to develop near/long-term engineering strategy, then actualize it.
  5. Assess skills of current engineering staff & outside contractors; augment them as needed
  6. Implement and optimize our engineering Knowledge Management library
  7. Work with Sales (including some direct customer interfacing) to convert customer feedback and pain-points into engineering actions.
  8. Support active involvement with industry associations and partners; participate in research studies, white papers & presentations
  9. Support Quality/Compliance Groups on new/existing U.S. & international certifications


Desired experience:
  • BS/MS Engineering, Software or Physical Science
  • 10+ years in an engineering, manufacturing or technology environment.
  • 5+ years of technical/operational leadership experience
  • Strong leadership skills, with a sense of ownership. Ability to gain consensus
  • Successfully bringing a small company through a period of dynamic change

Individuals whose backgrounds are predominantly software-oriented are not being considered.

Compensation: Base salary of $175-$225k. Bonus up to 25%
