Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in Studio Art, Digital Art

We are searching for a collaborative faculty member in studio art with experience in digital and new media techniques within the interdisciplinary realm of contemporary art. The ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to teaching and employ an integrated approach to cultivating artistic practice across foundational, emerging, and experimental modalities in their classroom. This position necessitates a proactive approach to updating curriculum and pedagogy in response to dynamically shifting digital and technological tools. We are particularly interested in artist-educators whose research and practice actively engage with these evolving tools and contribute to critical discourse in the field. Applicants should also demonstrate an active professional practice at the national or international level, with a track record of growing recognition in the field.

Full-time faculty teach undergraduate and graduate-level studio classes, seminars, and consistently serve on BFA and MFA committees within the interdisciplinary art environment of these programs. Tenure-track faculty members are expected to maintain active professional careers and participate in ongoing curricular development, departmental administration, and school governance. The course load for this position is 2:2.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct scholarly work (research and/or creative activity), with an active exhibition record and recognition in the field.
• Teach two courses per semester in both fall and spring semesters, including introductory-level courses.
• At least one of the four courses taught per year will overlap and collaborate with our Digital Media Practices Coordinate Major program.
• Areas of artistic expertise in research and teaching may include, but are not limited to:

• Emerging and new media art
• Time-based media, including sound art
• Experimental video
• Digital fabrication
• Computational art and creative coding
• Internet art
• Augmented reality, virtual reality, and/or artificial intelligence
• Interactive experiences
• Electronic objects and interfaces
• Digital drawing/painting
• Art games
• Bio/Eco art

• Support our students in developing creative works as part of a socially and culturally engaged research university.
• Coordinate teaching with graduate teaching assistants and adjunct faculty in digital art.
• Supervise/conduct individual studies with graduate students in digital art.
• Serve on MFA and BFA review committees, which meet twice a semester.
• Contribute to curricular revision and development to build a progressive, innovative, and destination arts program.
• Contribute to the safe and effective supervision of the digital art classroom, in concert with other colleagues and staff as available. This may include repair / replacement of equipment, supervision of student workers, managing material inventories, etc.
• Participate in service activities within the Newcomb Art Department, the School of Liberal Arts, and the University.

Professor of Practice in Photography

We are searching for a collaborative faculty member in photography with the ability to teach the majority of the following areas: lighting, digital workflow, inkjet printing, film processing, scanning, B&W darkroom printing, alternative and hybrid photographic processes, cameraless photography, the evolving utilization of AI in image creation, and courses addressing issues of representation in historical and/or contemporary contexts.

The ideal candidate will possess a dynamic record of utilizing and teaching photographic media, employing an integrated approach to cultivating artistic practice across both traditional and emerging processes. We are particularly interested in artist-educators whose practice engages with the nature of representation, decolonization, documentary methods that challenge historical uses of the genre, performative aspects of the medium, or any new form of practice that contributes to the expanded field of photography.

The Professor of Practice in Photography teaches undergraduate studio courses, with the opportunity to teach thematic, interdisciplinary, and/or graduate-level studio courses when possible. This faculty member will also serve on BFA and MFA committees (as their schedule allows) within the interdisciplinary art environment of these programs. The course load for this position is 3:3.

Responsibilities:

• Teach 3 courses per semester in both fall and spring semesters, including introductory-level courses.
• Support our students in developing creative works as part of a socially and culturally engaged research university.
• Serve on an average of two MFA committees per year, which meet twice a semester for one hour.
• Serve on an average of two BFA committees per year, which meet twice a semester for 45 minutes.
• Contribute to the safe and effective supervision of the photography facilities, in concert with other colleagues and staff.
