Assistant Professor, Japanese Sociolinguistics:

The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures (EALL), invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor of Japanese specializing in Japanese Sociolinguistics. Appointment to begin August 1, 2025 pending position clearance and availability of funds.

The Department of EALL is among the largest departments of its kind in the country and offers a curriculum unparalleled in its breadth and scope in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language, linguistics, literature, and culture. We offer BA in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; MA & PhD in EALL, with a concentration on Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Linguistics and Literature.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach introductory and upper-division undergraduate courses in Japanese language and linguistics;
  • Teach graduate courses in Japanese linguistics and sociolinguistics;
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Participate in graduate committees;
  • Maintain an active agenda of scholarly research and publication in area(s) of specialization;
  • Participate in departmental and university service;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in Japanese language or Japanese linguistics or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing (ABD will be considered, but all requirements for doctoral degree must be completed by August 2025);
  2. Demonstrated expertise in Japanese sociolinguistics;
  3. Demonstrated experience in teaching and service;
  4. Ability to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  5. Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of specialization;
  6. High level of proficiency in Japanese and English;
  7. Ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.

Desirable qualifications

  1. Research capability in an additional area of Japanese Linguistics beyond Japanese sociolinguistics;
  2. Teaching experience at a college level;
  3. Demonstrated ability to support the universitys mission of diversity, equity and inclusion.
