My client is looking for a sports-loving Lead Data Scientist to join their team of engineers and scientists dedicated to advancing safety and performance in sports and entertainment. Specializing in data-driven products, testing, analysis, and consulting services for global clients, leveraging cutting-edge technologies in physical and cloud computing to minimize sports injuries.
As a Lead Data Science, you will spearhead efforts in sports analytics. In this role, you will play a crucial part in solving complex client challenges related to injury prevention and performance enhancement. You will lead a team focused on leveraging data from athlete-worn sensors, game video analysis, and advanced databases to address critical research questions.
Responsibilities:
Lead and mentor a team of junior data analysts, focusing on data modeling, visualization, and presentation of findings.
Frame analytical questions from a data science perspective to guide research on topics such as injury reduction strategies and performance analysis.
Develop methods to quantify and analyze athlete movements using diverse data sources including sensors and computer vision outputs.
Collaborate closely with engineering and biomechanics experts to integrate insights into actionable recommendations for clients.
Engage with clients, demonstrating strong communication skills to translate technical findings into actionable insights for non-technical stakeholders.
Qualifications:
PhD or Master's degree in Biostatistics, Sports Analytics, Data Science, or a related field.
Extensive commercial experience in a data science role, with experience in a leadership capacity.
Strong proficiency in Python and experience with AWS for data processing and analysis.
Prior experience in sports analytics or related fields is highly desirable.
Proven ability to manage full lifecycle projects from model development through to presentation of results.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, small-team environment.
Additional Information:
Location: Charlottesville, VA (relocation assistance available).
Competitive compensation: $180,000-$200,000 annually, performance-based bonus, and equity options.
Travel requirement: Up to 20%, with occasional trips to major sports events and client locations.
Interview process: 2-3 rounds including technical discussions and onsite team interaction.
