Job Description:

Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Support, the Academic & Transfer Counselor, School of Health & Patient Simulation works in the Academic Advising & Transfer Center. This position is highly collaborative, working closely with advisors in the STEM Center, Lead: Female Leadership and Mentoring Program, Male Initiative for Leadership and Education and TRIO Student Support Services.

The Academic & Transfer Counselor provides holistic student support for registration, retention, student success, transfer and/or completion. This position works collaboratively to ensure every student in their assigned caseload is provided with individualized, holistic and proactive academic, career and transfer counseling and support.

Responsibilities:

With an intentional focus on students enrolled in School of Health & Patient Simulation (SHPS) programs and/those interested in exploring programs and careers in SHPS related fields, this position is responsible for:

  • Advising and holistic wraparound support for an assigned caseload of students, including but not limited to areas such as course registration, graduation requirements, and major/degree program.
  • Providing guidance and support for major/career pathway exploration to clarify student interests, skills, and academic goals mapped to an academic plan and educational/career pathway.
  • Sharing information on college programs, student support services, financial assistance, and referrals to campus supports as needed.
  • Engaging in regular, proactive communication and ongoing outreach via phone, text, e-mail, and one-on-one contact to students. Address early alerts and offer referrals to support and resources.
  • Serving as a liaison to faculty and staff in the School of Health and Patient Simulation staying current on program requirements and career pathways in order to relay current information to students and the advising team. Maintaining files and records of assigned caseload to track enrollment, retention, and graduation/transfer.
  • Participate in enrollment service events and initiatives aimed at promoting the use of college-wide systems and processes such as registration, billing/payments, financial aid status, and academic status.
  • Participate in enrollment services, events, and outreach initiatives including new student orientation and onboarding, welcome events, etc.
  • Assisting enrollment services during peak registration periods, providing advising and registration support as assigned.
  • Working cross-functionally with other teams, building customer relationships, and other special projects, as necessary.
  • Participating in department, division and college-wide meetings as well as committees and professional development opportunities as assigned.
  • Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned, which do not alter the basic level of the position.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Health Care, or closely related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience and/or training involving college admissions, academic advising, career development, program/project management, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess and negotiate complex, highly sensitive situations.
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with students, internal and external colleagues, and community partners.
  • Possess strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, time-management, prioritization, customer service and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience providing advising/coaching in an educational setting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA regulations,
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of individuals, traditionally underrepresented or under-served, first-generation, low-socioeconomic, or non-traditional populations.
  • Must be team oriented and detail oriented.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service in-person and in the virtual environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Student Affairs or related field
  • Ellucian Student Information Systems experience preferred.
  • Experience working in a community college.
  • Bilingual or Bicultural (Spanish and English).
  • Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population in a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands:

Works in an office setting. Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. The individual needs to move about inside the office to access office machinery. Constantly operates a computer and other equipment i.e. copier. This person frequently communicates with students, faculty and staff. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Salary: $68,201 - $82,169. Grade 5 per MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement. https://www.mass.edu/forfacstaff/classificationspecs/home.asp. 37.5 hours per week (Monday-Thursday, 9 am - 5 pm, Fridays 8 am - 4 pm). Requires flexibility to work occasional evenings and/or weekends as demand dicates.
