Job Description:

The University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Medical Genetics & Genomics is seeking a Nurse Clinician at 50% effort to join our team. In this position you will function as a clinical nurse expert and care coordinator providing direct specialized nursing care for Pediatrics Genetics Clinics. In this role you will interface with administrative, clinical nursing staff, physicians, patients, and families. You will help facilitate changes in care based on systematic evaluation and evidence-based research.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborates in the implementation of patient care plans and follow-up care coordination for patients within the Pediatrics Genetics clinics, in particular patients with lysosomal storage disorders (e.g. Fabry disease, Gaucher disease).
  • Coordinates patient care with pre- and post-clinic planning and preparation that may involve communication between multiple disciplines including home health agencies, referring physicians and other community services. Coordinates follow-ups visit appointments and ensures the implementation of the care plan.
  • Follows up with test results to patients, physicians and any outside agencies or services directly involved in patients' care plans. Ensures that test results are entered, and results are scanned into EPIC. Populates the problem list/diagnostic summary in EPIC for patients seen in Genetics.
  • Conducts quality initiatives within the care setting. Uses judgment and expertise to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address patient health issues.
  • Composes letters to insurance companies for prior approvals that are required for testing and other services (genetic, radiologic, etc.).
  • Assists physicians and/or mid-level providers with clinic preparation, patient education and care coordination for genetic clinics.
  • Assists in the continued use of the clinical trial and genetic registry databases and provides training to other support staff that may be involved in their use. Contacts research subjects and families as directed by genetics faculty members. Obtains informed consent from research subjects for participation in these observational studies.
  • Performs other special projects and tasks as assigned.

The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board-certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, a nurse practitioner, genetic counselors, nurses and a dietitian. Required Qualifications:
  • A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
  • More than 1 years of nursing experience is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise working with pediatric patients and their families.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
Highly Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Nursing is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated experience providing educational presentations to healthcare personnel is highly desired.
  • Knowledge and experience with medical genetics and infusion therapy are highly desired.
