The Daily News in Southwest Washington state is seeking a curious, multitasking reporter to build a beat around local business - including the area's large industrial footprint of paper mills and manufacturing companies, and its smaller, independent restaurants and shops.
This full-time position in our upbeat, digital-first newsroom will provide opportunities to write daily news, such as business openings and closings, and deeper enterprise reporting such as on the Port of Longview, one of the state's 75 ports and a key economic driver in Cowlitz County.
We're looking for a reporter who will plug in quickly, invest in relationships, connect readers with what they can't see themselves, and write with authority. Previous reporting experience is preferred; recent college graduates are also encouraged to apply.
This is a union position with pay starting at $43,680 annually. Hours will vary and could include weekend shifts.
This position is responsible for:
Conceptualizing and writing about four stories a week that affect Cowlitz County residents around the economy, local businesses, and finances, including how state and federal issues affect us at home.
Writing "deep dives" and pursuing investigative stories regularly.
Staying up to date on local issues by regularly attending area meetings, including those of business nonprofits and government boards.
Develop sources - from elected officials to mill workers to union reps - to uncover the news affecting our region first.
Taking photos and videos that add to your written pieces to further tell the stories readers want and need.
Working as a team player and individually as needed.
Performing other duties as assigned, including writing some general assignment pieces.
Longview is located about 45 minutes north of Portland, Oregon, and two hours south of Seattle. Love nature? The Pacific Ocean is a one-hour drive to the west, the Columbia River Gorge is about an hour south, and Mount St. Helens and surrounding lakes and mountains are an hour to the east.
When Mont St. Helens blew its top 44 years ago, The Daily News was there, winning a Pulitzer Prize and other awards for our coverage.
