Description

Drop-in math tutors perform tutoring primarily on campus for a range of college math classes in an ever-changing and sometimes demanding environment which could include many students at once in up to 15 different courses. Drop-in tutors will also be monitoring the online drop-in math channel. Tutors need to be available in the mornings and at least one evening per week.


Candidates must be comfortable with the following mathematics courses:


Pre-Algebra, Algebra, College Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus 1 and 2, Introductory Statistics, and College Mathematics




JOB SUMMARY


Responsible to facilitate tutoring and learning, provide academic support to CCC students through one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions in Mathematics and serve as a guide and coach to assist students to become successful independent learners while creating a comfortable and supporting atmosphere.




ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Help tutees develop study skills and acclimate to college level coursework

  • Tutor a wide range of college level math classes, in a variable group environment, focusing on individual needs of up to 18 students enrolled in a variety of math courses

  • Conduct 1:1 math tutoring appointments as needed

  • Communicate with the College's STEM Specialist and Director of Academic Services regularly to voice concerns and seek guidance when necessary

  • Assist in review sessions for the College's most populated mathematics courses

  • Communicate subject matter to tutees in a concise and effective manner

  • Navigate learning obstacles by understanding learning styles and integrating effective study and learning strategies for academic success

  • Develop independent learning by promoting appropriate learning attitudes and behaviors

  • Monitor student understanding and require tutees to participate in sessions

  • Maintain academic honesty by not doing a tutees homework or take-home quizzes/exams

  • Maintain consistent weekly availability in the Academic Center

  • Submit accurate timesheets and all session-related paperwork in a timely manner

  • Maintain excellent responsibility, reliability, punctuality, and professional behavior

  • Attend trainings, participate in professional development as required, and develop a good understanding of college services, support, and online resources

  • Create a welcoming and positive environment that is sensitive to student diversity

  • Greet visitors, students, faculty and staff; perform reception desk duties

  • Demonstrate above-average creative problem-solving, critical thinking, patience, and decision making skills

  • Maintain tutor-student confidentiality; uphold college and Academic Center's mission statements; handle confidential information in compliance with FERPA and Title IX.

  • Use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems

  • Use computers for word processing

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:



  • Associate or equivalent credits (60 credits)

  • Ability to effectively tutor a wide variety of courses including Pre-algebra, Algebra, College Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, Calculus 1 and 2, Introductory Statistics, College Mathematics

  • Extensive coursework in the subject area to be tutored

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Availability to work approximately 24 hours per week, including some mornings and at least one evening per week.

  • Must be positive, cooperative, and supportive




Preferred:



  • Bachelor's or master's degree in mathematics or related field

  • Experience in educational environment

  • Familiarity with Logic, Matlab, financial math, set theory, Java, Physics, medical math, differential equations, linear algebra, multivariate calculus, TI-83/84 calculators, and Desmos




PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


This work is normally sedentary which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:



  • Hear/talk/communicate - Must be able to exchange information and communicate

  • Visual Acuity/ability to perceive or detect surroundings

  • Mental acuity - Able to focus, concentrate, understand and convey subject matter

  • Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another

  • Repetitive motion (i.e. keyboarding)




WORK ENVIRONMENT:


College campus, direct contact with diverse students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office, meeting, and training rooms; use of safe work place practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations. Observance of College policies. Work hours may vary not to exceed 29 hours per week and will require several mornings per week as well as one evening per week.
