Job Description:

Job no: 493689

Work type: Student (Graduate Assistant)

Location: Orlando, FL, Winter Park, FL

Categories: Dean of Faculty CLA

Division: Academic Affairs

Position Summary:

The Office of Academic Advising aims to work dynamically and collaboratively with students to clarify and achieve their short-and long-term goals. This process encourages students to take responsibility for shaping their futures, employ interdependence, and become more empathetic towards themselves and others.

Graduate Assistants (GA) in the Office of Academic Advising and Academic Support provide individualized and group support to undergraduate CLA students. The position focuses on engaging with students who receive an academic alert or a faculty referral and are identified as needing additional academic advising, academic support, or academic probation.

Logistically, this can range from Ten (10) to Forty (40) undergraduate students per semester. The GA must maintain consistent communication with students, ensuring they are supported in reaching their goals at the end of the term. If a student is enrolled in the Learning Strategies Seminar (INT 100), the GA will ensure they understand course requirements and feel supported in completing them. The GA will have between ten (10) and twelve (12) one-on-one ongoing or two-time meetings with students. These sessions are opportunities to collaboratively work with students identified for further support from our office. The sessions include time management plans, individual success plans, academic advising, graduation plans, long-term and short-term goal development, and the knowledge and skills to successfully complete assignments and connect them to additional campus support and resources.

The meetings should strengthen the student's self-leadership, social-emotional health, and the development of an individual plan for success. The GA will also attend the INT 100 Learning Strategies course twice per week, engage in discussions with students, and complete any additional tasks needed by the Director of Academic Advising. We offer flexible scheduling because our undergraduate students need support at different hours of the day; as a result, this need allows this position to be flexible with the GA hour availability. The paid position can work up to twenty hours per week. Of those hours, our office will work with the GA to develop a semester schedule, of which three of those hours will be for a weekly team meeting and the INT 100 class. Required training dates will be before an August 26th start date.
