Description
We are currently seeking to hire a Superintendent of Grounds responsible for the maintenance and presentation of campus grounds at all SIUE locations (Edwardsville, Alton, and East St. Louis). This position will manage and coordinate Grounds personnel across locations to ensure the very best presentation of the University and to address University priorities or immediate needs in coordination with senior University leaders.
Key Responsibilities:
Grounds Maintenance Management: Oversee all aspects of grounds maintenance, including lawn care, tree trimming, planting, irrigation, and maintenance of roads and sidewalks, including pothole filling and snow removal.
Equipment Oversight: Manage maintenance and operation of grounds equipment, such as mowers, trimmers, and excavation vehicles, ensuring all equipment is in safe working condition.
Waste Management: Supervise outdoor trash removal and recycling of bulk materials, maintaining cleanliness and sustainability across the campus.
Athletic Fields Management: Ensure the proper maintenance and preparation of athletic fields for events and activities.
Furniture and Equipment Logistics: Coordinate the moving of furniture and equipment for various projects as requested by faculty and staff.
Wildlife Management: Implement wildlife management strategies, including geese control and squirrel capture, to maintain a safe and pleasant campus environment.
Event Setup: Provide logistical support for outdoor events, including setup and breakdown.
Staff Supervision: Supervise and manage the Grounds workforce, including making daily assignments, providing technical guidance, conducting performance reviews, and handling hiring, disciplinary actions, and staff training.
Seasonal Staffing: Recruit and hire temporary staff for summer projects and snow removal operations.
Quality Assurance: Conduct routine inspections of grounds, ensuring maintenance standards are upheld to enhance campus appeal and support student recruitment efforts.
Snow and Ice Management: Assess the need for salting and snow removal, schedule staff accordingly, and provide campus condition updates to administrative staff. Manage contracts with external snow removal services and maintain salt inventory.
Storm Damage Management: Coordinate the response to storm and ice damage, implementing restoration and recovery strategies for campus landscapes.
Interdepartmental Coordination: Work closely with other Facilities departments, including crafts and architecture, to ensure seamless operations and project collaboration.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all required regulatory permits are maintained, inspections are passed, and staff comply with pesticide and Commercial Driver’s License requirements, including ongoing education. Maintain compliance with Cougar Lake dam permit requirements.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school graduation or equivalent.
2. Five years of experience in grounds maintenance, two of which were in a supervisory capacity. (Credit for college course work in horticulture, landscape design, or other related fields may be substituted for up to two years of the non-supervisory experience on the basis of one semester hour of college credit being equivalent to one month of work experience.)
3. Eligibility for license to use or supervise the use of pesticides under the Illinois Pesticide Act, the category of the license depending on the nature of the work to be performed, and possession of the license within the probationary period.
Preferred Qualifications:
BS degree in agriculture or horticulture highly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs) 1. Broad knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and equipment. 2. Broad knowledge of landscape methods, materials, and design. 3. Knowledge of the use and application of pesticides. 4. Ability to coordinate schedules with other departments for moving equipment, furniture, and heavy items and scheduling other services. 5. Supervisory skills. 6. Managerial ability.
Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position. Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois Driver’s License or state of Illinois ID Card. Failure to produce the required documentation within 180 calendar days will result in immediate termination of employment.

Work Authorization Information: This position does not offer work authorization sponsorship.
