About the Department
The Division of Research is a comprehensive and strategic advocate for researchers at Brown, connecting them to critical resources inside and outside of Brown and supporting individuals and teams throughout every step of their research endeavors.
The Division aims to make the research process less complex by partnering with researchers to develop initial research strategies, identify funding opportunities, submit proposals, negotiate contracts, establish funding structures, guide technology transfer, support startup ventures and more. Overall, the Division of Research aims to reduce the administrative workload for Brown researchers, protect their intellectual property, manage conflicts of interest, ensure integrity of research, maintain compliance with state and federal regulations and increase external funding of research at Brown.
About the Opportunity
As a senior member of the Division of Research (DoR) leadership team, the Assistant Vice President for Research (AVPR) plays a broad, senior-level role in ensuring that the University's research infrastructure is robust and responsive to the needs of Brown investigators, their research partners and collaborators, and sponsors. With direct responsibility for Sponsored Projects and Research Integrity, the AVPR oversees important aspects of research administration and compliance at the University, supporting faculty throughout the grant lifecycle, seeking always to find the optimal sustainable balance between enabling research and protecting researchers, research subjects, and the University.
Beyond the broad portfolio of core research-support services that the AVP oversees, the AVPR supports the overall development and leadership of the DoR, providing counsel on ways to (re)deploy resources effectively, address emerging opportunities and risks, and maximize the efficiency of the Division. The AVPR reports directly to the Deputy Vice President for Research (DVPR) and together they assist and advise the Vice President for Research in broadly shaping the operational and strategic investments Brown can make in its research enterprise, including through the DoR's engagement with University governance and stakeholder groups, and in general assists the DVPR, VPR and other University leaders in developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and procedures that facilitate the conduct of research at Brown
