Job Description:
The Philosophy Department at Binghamton University, State University of New York, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a research specialization in Social and Political Philosophy, and/or Ethics, and/or Philosophy of Law. We are taking a broad look at promising research programs in all of these areas. All candidates must have a teaching competence in Philosophy of Law.
The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in the department's graduate program in Social, Political, Ethical, and Legal Philosophy (SPEL). SPEL is distinctive in supporting a diverse scholarly community engaged with value theory from multiple (including non-western) historical traditions as well as from a variety of contemporary approaches. Excellence in research and an appreciation of pluralism in philosophical inquiry are essential. The successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate courses, supervise teaching assistants, serve on thesis and dissertation committees, direct graduate-level work, and participate in department colloquia.
The teaching load for the position is 2/2. The successful candidate will be expected to regularly teach our upper-level undergraduate lecture course Philosophy of Law, as well as other courses that contribute to Binghamton University's large Philosophy, Politics, and Law major. The ability to contribute to the philosophical breadth of our course offerings is also welcome. As a department, we are committed to maintaining instructional quality at all levels, and demonstrated teaching effectiveness is valued.
The Philosophy Department is committed to equity and inclusion and is working to increase diversity amongst its faculty. Members of groups historically underrepresented in the field and those from non-traditional backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Additionally, evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service will be valued. Binghamton University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
Requirements:
The position begins at the start of the 2025 fall semester. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in philosophy or a closely related field in hand by time of appointment.
