Job Description




Position Summary:



This position is within the Fisher BioServices business unit of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The Operations Technician 1 position is responsible for the receipt, inventory, storage, withdrawal and shipment of biological specimens, samples, clinical agents, and materials from multiple commercial and government clients. These materials are stored at temperatures ranging from ambient (room temperature) to -20°C with potentially hazardous properties. This position uses database applications and standard precautionary procedures to work independently, be self-directed, communicate effectively, and use good judgment when making decisions. Internal or external client interaction occurs under the guidance of experienced professional or technical staff. This position may also participate in the assembly of kits and label printing.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:





  • Prepares samples or clinical agents for pickups, courier deliveries, and shipments.

  • Works closely with managers to support customer inquiries, discrepancies, inventory maintenance, and database updates.

  • Uses an inventory management system for data entry, sample tracking, and management of samples.

  • Maintains files for data validation and preparation of queries, ensuring accuracy and preparing detailed reports.

  • Performs internal specimen consolidation and reorganization projects under the guidance of a Lead Operations Technician.

  • Participates in process improvement activities to successfully implement world-class solutions.

  • Receives, handles, and inventories specimens of human, animal, and/or plant origin at temperatures ranging from ambient to -196°C, adhering strictly to safety guidelines.

  • Ensures compliance with cGMP parts 210 and 211 and company quality systems.

  • Adheres to SOPs, facility safety guidelines, and FDA requirements.

  • May prepare sample collection kits and make deliveries to clients as required.

  • May be required to travel to other facilities to meet business needs.

  • Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs.


Education/ Experience:





  • Equivalent experience or a high school diploma is required.

  • Minimum of one year of work experience in a field that follows GXP procedures, such as data entry, shipping and receiving, or sample management, is required.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:





  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and set priorities.

  • Proven verbal and written communication skills.

  • Effective interpersonal and teamwork skills.

  • Proficiency in preparing reports using Microsoft Excel.

  • Knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, and possibly Microsoft Access.

  • Ability to handle, process, and store compounds using a computerized storage and retrieval system.

  • Core hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, with additional hours as needed. Some weeks may require working from Tuesday to Saturday.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range estimated for this position based in Maryland is $13.82-$20.73.
