Under limited supervision, serves as member of the management team reporting to Laboratory Director. This role is responsible for managing and coordinating the daily functions and operations of assigned clinical laboratories to achieve accuracy and efficiency in testing, adequate delivery of laboratory services, and to ensure compliance with standards of laboratory regulating agencies, manages and utilizes resources, staff and material consistent with organization mission
II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

Confers with Laboratory Director where appropriate, regarding laboratory operation and the development, implementation, review and update of written policies, procedures, and protocols to provide for optimum functioning of the lab.
Assists the Laboratory Director with the formulation of policies, procedures and protocols relating to specimen processing, instrument and equipment maintenance and general operations. (To include safety and disaster preparedness.) Recommends changes in clinical laboratory procedures where appropriate.
Updates laboratory operating procedure manual.
Recommends the addition or modification of laboratory equipment, as necessary.
Ensures compliance with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies through periodic inspections and observation of practices. Takes appropriate action when violations occur.

Qualifications
III. Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Histotechnology or related science field, required. Master's degree, preferred.
Seven (7) years' experience in laboratory testing, including at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory capacity, required.
ASCP or equivalent nationally recognized certification, required.
IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficient knowledge of clinical laboratory process, testing and analytical procedures, techniques and quality assurance.
Knowledge of supervisory skills and directing the work of laboratory staff at all levels, assign work priorities, audit work quality, orient and train, evaluate and discipline appropriately as directed by the Laboratory Assistant Director Proficiency in use of computerized systems for tracking and evaluating laboratory test results and managing patient information, and for calibrating laboratory equipment.
Ability to read, write, speak English and perform mathematical and statistical operations for recording and evaluating lab results..
Ability to handle potentially infectious materials, such as, blood and body fluid specimens observing proper safety regulations and procedures.
Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to work with medical or nursing staff, in order to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens or lab tests.
