Provide support for pulmonary research by conducting molecular biology and physiology experiments including culturing airway cells, using CRISPR technology, , and performing microscopy and physiological assays; collecting and analyzing results and performing operational duties. Conduct research activities/experiments, collect, analyze and summarize data, prepare reports, contribute to manuscripts/publications, administrative and project management, facilities and equipment management, and supervision/staffing.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Research:
Perform research on airway epithelia using molecular biology & physiological assays.
Read and understand relevant literature to contribute to the interpretation of data and develop new hypotheses. Continue to read new literature relevant to the field.
Analyze and present data at laboratory meetings.
Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:
Work closely with established experimental protocols including execution, establishment, and modifications.
Perform CRISPR/Cas9 transduction, culture airway epithelia, assays that measure transepithelial ion and liquid transport, flow cytometry, fluorescent imaging.
Monitor, test and evaluate current procedures, and continual development of protocols.
Identify and adhere to Quality Assurance practices to maintain validity and integrity of research data.
Track progress/success of research project.
As skills develop may present results at lab meetings.
Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:
Perform statistical analysis of data and qualitative analysis.
Assist in preparing publications and presentations.
May contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition.
Present results/finds at team and departmental meetings; may present at local and national meetings.
Administrative and Project Management:
Make recommendations regarding the validity of research subjects and data.
May assist in ACURF submissions.
Responsible for following guidelines and maintaining required documentation in support of safety programs.
Facilities and Equipment Management:
Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities.
Monitor environmental risks and quality control.
Test new equipment and troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment failures and repairs.
Coordinate software licenses as necessary to complete projects.
Supervision/Staffing:
Provide ongoing training on basic and new lab techniques and protocols for employees.
Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to track progress and assure outcomes are achieved.
May participate in hiring staff and managing the performance of staff to assure staff to assure staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from the Principal Investigator.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and students.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
2+ years of laboratory experience is required.
DERSIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
2+ years of laboratory experience with experimental techniques related to cellular physiology is highly desired.
Experience with epithelial biology, including ion transport.
Experience with primary human cell models.
Experience with transfecting or infecting cells.
