Reporting to the Assistant Director of Grounds/Custodial Services, the Groundskeeping Lead performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance and improvement of university grounds and directs the daily activities of a groundskeeping crew.
Job Summary:
Delegates, oversees and performs assigned duties, including mowing, edging, eliminating weeds/grass, trimming, maintaining flower beds, vine removal and other grounds-related tasks.
Performs daily inspections and reports grounds issues, such as dead grass, tree damage, etc.
Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment; informs supervisor when repairs are needed.
Monitors materials and notifies supervisor of needed supplies.
Assigns litter control areas to crew members and inspects each area every Friday afternoon to ensure the campus is neat and trash-free.
Practices and instructs crew in safe use of equipment and chemicals and ensures crew members use university-provided safety equipment.
Assists other crews with equipment and labor as needed.
Required Qualifications:
High school diploma.
One year of experience in commercial/institutional grounds maintenance.
Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a groundskeeping lead or supervisor.
Valid pesticide license or ability to obtain after employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Summary:
General knowledge of the practice and procedures of grounds maintenance.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public.
Ability to lead and effectively guide subordinates in daily tasks.
Ability to perform manual labor and work outdoors in all types of weather.
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and operate all types of grounds maintenance equipment, including lawn mowers, weed eaters, backpack blowers, hand blowers, etc.
Travel/Overtime Requirements:
Occasional after-hours and weekend work.
