Summary: Under supervision of an Adaptive Recreation Opportunities Senior Specialist or Senior Supervisor, this position is responsible for creating and guiding individuals or small groups of individuals with varying abilities through workout programs tailored to each client to help them achieve their short and long-term fitness and wellness goals. Must be able to perform essential duties and responsibilities in a safe and enjoyable environment consistent with the stated values of the City of Fort Collins and the Recreation department.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive.
-Creates safe and effective workout programs and guides individual clients or groups of clients with disabilities, up to four, through the exercise routines for 30 minute or hour-long sessions only at recreation facilities.
-Stays within the scope of practice based on type of certifications held determined by the fitness industry.
-Must be able to establish a rapport with clients via professionalism and ability to communicate in person, on the phone, and over email. Listening to client's goals & needs, providing a fun, positive, motivating and safe atmosphere, and using appropriate language and conversations.
-Expected to communicate with supervisor in person, on the phone and over email; reads weekly emails, responds to emails, consistently checks email for new client forms, contacts new clients by phone and email within 48-72 hours upon receiving assigned client.
-Responsible for scheduling sessions with clients and expected to be prepared for each session, beginning & ending each one on time. Communicates with client if session needs to be canceled or rescheduled.
-Completes and documents initial interviews, appropriate assessments and paperwork for each client; keeps all documentation in a secure location.
-Programs are appropriate for each client; specific to their goals, fitness level & abilities and includes variety of exercises & proper progression/regression. Provides modifications for injury prevention.
-Educates and enforces weight room & safety rules and proper use of exercise equipment to clients/patrons of facility. Must be able to explain and demonstrate proper form, body alignment, and modifications of various exercises and basic anatomy principles.
-Monitors clients throughout the session and corrects form, provides verbal cues & safety cues and provides proper spotting.
-Required to verify that a session or package has been purchased and keep records of client sessions, programs, and progress.
-Always conducts self in a professional manner in accordance with City of Fort Collins and Recreation policies and procedures. May need to provide customer service to other patrons by answering fitness and facility related questions and pass on questions, concerns, and feedback to supervisor.
-Required to clock in before training session and wear City of Fort Collins provided trainer shirt when training clients and follow dress and appearance polices.
-May be asked to lead weight room orientation classes to youth and adults at the facilities.
-Attends all mandatory staff meetings and helps maintain cleanliness and organization of weight rooms and equipment. Cleans and returns all equipment used during sessions.
-Maintains current Personal Trainer certification at trainers' expense and keeps current on latest research and trends in your training or specialization. Maintains an understanding and knowledge of exercise science, nutrition, and wellness within the scope of your certification and training.
-May need to provide First Aid to patrons or clients in facilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position is not responsible for the supervision of employees.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations:
-Must have a current national personal training certification through a nationally accredited organization or another association approved by the fitness coordinator.
-Must have current CPR/AED certification.

• Maintains communication with coordinator, e.g., reads weekly emails, responds to questions, reports feedback received, keeps an accurate record of client sessions on tracking sheet, and attends staff meetings.
Step 2
• Accumulates 330 hours working as a Personal Trainer for the City of Fort Collins.
• A Favorable review is completed by supervisor using the Recreation Hourly Staff Evaluation.
• A received a favorable review from clients.
• Continues to perform duties as required & outlined in job description, maintains communication reflected in step 1.
Step 3
• Accumulates 700 hours working as a Personal Trainer for the City of Fort Collins.
• A Favorable review is completed by supervisor using the Recreation Hourly Staff Evaluation.
• A received a favorable review from clients.
• Continues to perform duties as required & outlined in job description, maintains communication reflected in step 1.
Step 4
• Accumulates 1250 hours working as a Personal Trainer for the City of Fort Collins.
• A Favorable review is completed by supervisor using the Recreation Hourly Staff Evaluation.
• A received a favorable review from clients.
• Continues to perform duties as required & outlined in job description, maintains communication reflected in step 1.
Step 5
• Accumulates 2000 hours working as a Personal Trainer for the City of Fort Collins.
• A Favorable review is completed by supervisor using the Recreation Hourly Staff Evaluation.
• A received a favorable review from clients.
• Continues to perform duties as required & outlined in job description, maintains communication reflected in step 1.
All steps based on budget availability and current City of Fort Collins Policy Based on previous employee experience steps can be skipped with the approval of Area Manager
