Responsible for carrying out microbiology work related to the objectives of NIH funded proposal to study new molecules to disrupt bacterial polysaccharide metabolism and to evaluate the effects of this disruption on bacterial virulence factors. Other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
60% - Essential - Basic lab duties including: maintenance and culture of bacterial strains, experience with aseptic technique, making various types of bacterial media plus required solutions. Being responsible for proper disposal of chemical and biohazardous waste. Maintaining proper chemical inventories. Maintaining laboratory equipment (including balances, plate readers, centrifuges, incubators, and an anaerobic chamber).
20% - Essential - Conducting various assays including determining Minimum Inhibitory Concentration Studies with bioactive compounds, assessing biofilm formatting and disruption, and various molecular analyses (including PCR and RT-qPCR).
20% - Essential - Developing new SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for working with new organisms and testing new biochemical activities (potentially including, but not limited to eukaryotic cell line maintenance, bacterial toxin activity testing, and others).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - High School or Equivalent and work experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting, in a health care setting or in a general maintenance or machine shop environment. A bachelor's degree in a related scientific discipline may be substituted for the required work experience.
