A QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine Department) is a professional working on a merchant vessel who is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the ship's propulsion and auxiliary systems. Some of the key responsibilities of a QMED include:
Monitoring and maintaining the ship's machinery, including engines, generators, boilers, and other mechanical equipment.
Carrying out routine inspections and preventive maintenance tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the ship's systems.
Troubleshooting and repairing malfunctions or breakdowns in the ship's machinery.
Operating and controlling the ship's propulsion and auxiliary systems during navigation and cargo operations.
Collaborating with other crew members to plan and execute maintenance and repair work.
Keeping accurate records of maintenance and repair work performed on the ship's machinery.
Complying with all regulatory requirements related to the operation and maintenance of the ship's machinery.
The ideal candidate for a QMED position should have a strong technical background in marine engineering and a working knowledge of diesel engines, boilers, and other shipboard machinery. They should also be able to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, and possess strong problem-solving skills.
