The Sr. Administrator, Oncology is the administrative leader for the Department of Oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (SOM) and the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH). This leader works in close collaboration with leaders at other current (Bayview, Sibley, Greenspring) and future (Northern Virginia, Bethesda) Oncology practice locations to plan and organize services.
The Sr. Administrator is accountable for the academic, clinical and financial oversight for the Department and Functional Unit with direct responsibility for inpatient and outpatient operations at JHH, including strategic direction, administration of existing programs and the development of new programs to ensure that goals and strategic imperatives are met or exceeded.
This role is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the department's operational plan, along with providing management for the department's immediate and long-term strategic plans, for both SOM and JHH activities. The Sr. Administrator is responsible for maintaining relationships with all levels of administration within the School of Medicine and JHH. He/she provides assistance and partnership to the Department Clinical Director, JHH executive leadership team and Service Line leadership in the form of analysis, consultation and planning, and implementation. The Senior Administrator is responsible for the non-faculty administrative staff in executing the department's clinical and academic activities.
The general scope of responsibilities include: financial management/analysis, budget development and execution, grants management, contract administration, compensation planning, personnel and management recruiting, utilization and productivity management, marketing and space management. Additionally, the Sr. Administrator is responsible for the department's Professional Fee Billing Office and Access Call Center in collaboration with the Clinical Practice Association and Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians.
He/she is responsible for compliance with the rules, policies and procedures of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Clinical Practice Association, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Health Systems. The position requires a firm understanding of national health care and research trends/impacts, policies and issues.
Reporting Relationship
The Sr. Administrator, Oncology has a matrix reporting relationship to the Clinical Director of Oncology, the Chief Financial Officer, School of Medicine, the Chief Operating Officer, the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Chief Administrative Officer Cancer Service Line, Johns Hopkins Health System.
Duties and responsibilities:
Strategic Programmatic Planning:
Continuously assess industry trends to identify growth opportunities in clinical sub-specialties
Manage strategic planning for department (goal setting, execution, etc.)
Ensure appropriate affiliation/collaboration across the department and with other SOM departments
Regularly review marketing analyses with Planning and Marketing team to identify geographic growth/needs areas and growth needs.
Maintain thorough and current knowledge of issues related to healthcare reform, government rules, regulations and reimbursement systems.
Financial Management:
Oversight and management of annual SOM and JHH budgets, GAAP financial reports, and applicable P&Ls
Direct grants management and submissions or align with appropriate departmental resources to ensure that this area is managed effectively.
Perform ongoing analyses of departmental fiscal operations to identify improvements.
Manage professional fee billing/revenue cycle development through appropriate departmental resources.
Manage the department's annual operating budget and endowment pool.
Practice Management:
Analyze practice results, including: volume statistics, billing data, expense and revenue trends.
Compare results to industry benchmarks; work through departmental leadership to implement relevant and approved changes to meet these standards as necessary.
Develop and monitor strategies to maintain an optimal number of clinical specialty areas.
Project annual clinical volumes (inpatient, clinic, and brain stimulation procedures)
Department Administration:
Represent the department in all opportunities within the Johns Hopkins organization as well as with external organizations to promote the department's assets and strengths.
Promote employee engagement and recognition as a departmental priority
Coordinate with appropriate JHU resources to manage international affairs
Work with appropriate JHH and JHU resources to manage all facility renovations, new construction, and physical plant-related projects. Manage space allocation needs of the department
Oversee legal/regulatory compliance, internal audit, policy implementation, and maintenance for the Department.
Participate in administrator on-call rotation as requested.
Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, finance, accounting, a related field, or a health care field such as nursing is required.
MBA, MHA, MPH, or other related field is strongly preferred.
7-10 years of progressive experience as an administrator at a complex health system, preferably in oncology, navigating multiple priorities
Experience leading cancer services is strongly preferred.
Experience working in an academic environment is preferred
Demonstrated record of related accomplishments along with strong financial and analytic capabilities
