Fred Smith Company is currently searching for an experienced Party Chief for our Survey Department. With over 90 years of proven success, FSC is an established, and growing, heavy highway, site construction contractor and asphalt manufacturer with approximately 1,300 employees based in Raleigh, North Carolina and operating as far East as Kitty Hawk and as far West as Winston-Salem.
JOB DUTIES:
Collect information needed to carry out new surveys, using source maps, previous survey data, photographs, computer records, and other relevant information.
Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction, using engineering plans.
Performs complex surveying calculations using engineering; analyzes raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy; provides detailed survey notations of surveyed field work.
Conduct surveys to ascertain the locations of natural features and man-made structures on the Earth's surface, underground, and underwater, using electronic distance-measuring equipment and other surveying instruments.
Direct and supervise work of subordinate members of surveying parties.
Lay out grids, and determine horizontal and vertical controls.
Maintain equipment and vehicles used by surveying crews.
Perform calculations to determine earth curvature corrections, atmospheric impacts on measurements, traverse closures and adjustments, azimuths, level runs, and placement of markers.
Perform manual labor, such as cutting brush for lines, carrying stakes, rebar, and other heavy items, and stacking rods.
Provide assistance in the development of methods and procedures for conducting field surveys.
Record survey measurements and descriptive data, using notes, drawings, sketches, and inked tracings.
Search for section corners, property irons, and survey points.
Set out and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation.
Compare survey computations with applicable standards to determine adequacy of data.
Prepare topographic and contour maps of land surveyed, including site features and other relevant information, such as charts, drawings, and survey notes.
Operate and manage land-information computer systems, performing tasks such as storing data, making inquiries, and producing plots and reports.
Requirements:
Knowledge of principles and practices of land surveying, including boundary determination, legal descriptions, construction, topographic surveying, and GIS
Experience with field surveying practices and techniques, including radial staking, uses and capabilities of survey instruments, including electronic total station, data collector, theodolites, network control stations, and GPS measuring equipment
Up to date with current laws, rules, and regulations regarding subdivisions of land, boundary locations, mapping, and surveying practices, including the Professional Land Surveyor's Act
3 to 5 years of previous survey crew experience required
Ability to exercise sound judgment to comply with instructions or prescribed routines, methods or practices involved in the making of minor decisions within the limitations of standard methods and procedures
Valid driver's license with positive driving history
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen
Must be authorized to work in the USA
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:
Heavy physical effort is required. While performing the duties of this position, the Employee is regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the facility and job site. The employee is required to walk; have the full use of hands and fingers to handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance. Verbal and written communication is required, as well as the ability to hear. Must be capable of lifting and transporting up to 40 lbs for a period of up to 30 minutes at a time and incrementally throughout the day, position equipment as directed and drive stakes and other marking material (using a mallet or sledgehammer) for construction purposes. Must have the ability to ascend/descend slopes, traverse difficult terrain, climb fencing, cross creeks or creek beds. Must have the ability to walk and stand for extended periods. Must have the ability to measure, handle supplies, pull manhole covers with hook, operate tools such as machete and bush-hook to clear underbrush and use a shovel.
