Job Description:
Director of Estimating - Solar Primary Responsibilities & DutiesBidding and Preconstruction
- Manage all bidding processes, including prequalification's (RFQs/RFPs) and shortlisting.
- Analyze bidding documents to identify risk elements and provide evaluations.
- Submit pre-bid RFIs to clarify scope and requirements.
- Maintain bid plans, documents, and related materials.
- Conduct cost-effectiveness reviews and propose value-added alternatives.
Estimating and Analysis
- Generate detailed cost estimates using benchmark data, trends, and historical pricing.
- Perform comprehensive quantity take-offs to create accurate estimates.
- Communicate with stakeholders (architects, owners, consultants) to clarify scopes, materials, and schedules.
- Ensure bids meet contractual and compliance requirements, including scope, schedules, and terms.
Collaboration and Coordination
- Work closely with the Operations Team to align on risks, project execution plans, and schedules.
- Document project inclusions, exclusions, and assumptions.
- Lead bid reviews and ensure proposals are comprehensive and accurate.
- Support Operations during project execution, including SOV setup, vendor buyouts, and change order pricing.
Documentation and Reporting
- Organize and archive bid information for future reference.
- Participate in post-mortem meetings to incorporate lessons learned into future estimates.
Industry Knowledge & Relationships
- Maintain and grow relationships with vendors and subcontractors to ensure access to high-quality and cost-effective partners.
- Keep up with industry trends, new technologies, and regulations impacting project costs.
- Use advanced estimating technologies and tools to improve processes and accuracy.
- Partner with the Procurement Manager to manage vendor pricing and ensure alignment with construction schedules.
Team Building & Leadership
- Promote and embody company core values in all interactions.
- Lead the Estimating Team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
- Develop and implement SOPs for estimating processes, ensuring consistency and efficiency.
- Mentor and train team members, encouraging professional growth and accountability.
- Collaborate with other departments to optimize processes and reduce constraints.
Key Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of electrical estimating experience, with 3+ years in management.
- Strong knowledge of grid-tied PV systems, building codes, and NFPA 70E guidelines.
- Proficiency in cost-estimating software (e.g., PVBid, Accubid) and productivity tools (Google Suite).
- Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
- Availability for occasional travel within California.
Additional Requirements
- Must pass a criminal background and motor vehicle record check.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
