The Mobile Diesel Mechanic plays a critical role in Fleet Maintenance by ensuring the smooth operation of heavy-duty trucks, trailers, and other company equipment.
Job Expectations/Duties
Inspections and Preventive Maintenance: The mechanic will regularly inspect company assets to identify and address potential issues before they escalate. This proactive approach ensures the longevity and reliability of the assets.
Preventative Maintenance Documentation and Parts Procurement: The mechanic is responsible for accurately documenting the work completed after performing maintenance. Additionally, the role includes identifying and procuring necessary parts to facilitate timely repairs, ensuring minimal downtime for company equipment.
Quality Assurance: After completing repairs, the mechanic conducts a final operational test on the equipment to ensure the repairs meet quality standards and the equipment functions correctly.
Record Keeping: The Mobile Diesel Mechanic maintains written repair orders, providing a traceable history of the work performed on each piece of equipment. This documentation is crucial for tracking maintenance, identifying recurring problems, and ensuring accountability.
Equipment Verification: The mechanic performs lot checks to verify the overall equipment condition in the lot. This proactive measure allows for the early detection of potential issues and ensures the equipment is in optimal working order.
Adaptability: Besides the primary responsibilities, the mechanic will undertake other duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to contribute to various tasks within the fleet maintenance team.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Certification: A High School Diploma or GED is required, along with Inspector and Brake Inspector Training Certificates or equivalent relevant experience. The mechanic must possess an extensive understanding of air brake systems, encompassing diagnostics, repair procedures, and adherence to federal standards.
Licensure: A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is necessary, or the candidate must demonstrate the ability to obtain this license within 90 days of being hired.
Experience: The role necessitates experience with medium/heavy-duty truck repair gained either in a shop/dealership environment or through manufacturer-provided CBT training course certificates.
Travel to other terminals is required and estimated at 50%.
Preferred Qualifications
While not mandatory, trade school or military training in diesel mechanics is preferred, along with prior experience as a mobile mechanic. Knowledge of various maintenance types — preventative, predictive, routine, non-routine, and emergency — for equipment powered by diesel and gasoline engines, including auxiliary equipment, is also advantageous.
