Reporting to the Dean of Student Affairs, the Director of Athletics is a strong leader and administrator of SUNY Maritime College's NCAA Division III intercollegiate varsity athletics program, club sports, intramurals and physical education. The Director of Athletics works cooperatively with students, faculty and staff to advance the college's athletics program, recruit and retain exceptional coaches and promote the academic achievement and physical well-being of students.
The Director of Athletics is responsible for development, administration, and compliance of the athletics program and for the day-to-day operation of the athletics facilities. In this capacity, the Director provides leadership over such functions as the recruitment of athletes; compliance with U.S. Department of Education, Title IX, New York State, the NCAA, and SUNY policies and procedures.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Leadership
Provide effective planning, leadership and administration of the Department of Athletics within the framework of SUNY Maritime College's overall academic mission
Recruit and provide leadership, organization and management of the coaching and administrative staff in order to attain optimal operational, academic, fiscal and athletic performance
Recruit, mentor, and supervise coaches, trainers, and others in support of the program
Serve on committees that further the interests of the Department on campus, in the Conference(s) and NCAA
Develop and implement learning assessment programs in line with Maritime guidelines
Assume other duties, responsibilities and relationships as assigned by the Dean of Student Affairs
Management
Provide oversight to the sports information program including the development of relationships with the media
Supervise all programs in support of the health, safety, retention, and academic progress of student-athletes
Manage the athletics budget and collaborate with Institutional Advancement, the Office of the President, Alumni Relations and others in all fund-raising activities in support of athletics
Supervise all administrative, operational and business functions of the Department in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the College
Supervise scheduling for all intercollegiate athletic events and facilities and work in collaboration with the office of conference services for all outside rentals
Assist in planning and executing construction and maintenance projects involving the College's athletic facilities
Responsible for all aspects of the aquatics programs at Maritime College
Development and Outreach
Cultivate and enhance relationships as necessary to support and represent the mission of the College and the Department of Athletics, including civic, media, booster and fan groups
Participate proactively in public relations and fund raising activities with all relevant constituencies and in collaboration with the office of Institutional Advancement
Develop and maintain a long range strategic plan for the department that includes identifying outside sources of revenue for the department and be an active fundraiser
Maintain and grow the department's community involvement, strategic partnerships, and service initiatives
Establish relationships with student-athlete alumni, encouraging their involvement in the program after graduation, including the Maritime College Hall of Fame
Student Centeredness
Understand and foster student-athlete academic and personal success in collaboration with Student Affairs, the Regiment of Cadets, faculty, academic administration, and the Faculty Athletics Representative
Demonstrate commitment to diversity and gender equity
Oversee all aspects of the physical education program
Oversee all club sports and their operations
Compliance
Oversee membership and affiliation with all competitive leagues and conferences
Maintain integrity and enhance the competitiveness of the athletics program
Oversee compliance with all College, NCAA and Conference(s) rules and regulations
Represent SUNY Maritime College at NCAA, Conference(s) and national meetings
Complete and present for submission all required reports for the NCAA, Conference(s), State and Federal Government, and College
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in athletic administration or related field
Minimum of five years' progressive experience in athletics administration at thecollegiate level
Excellent interpersonal, writing and communication skills
Experience recruiting and supervising coaches and an excellent compliance record with the NCAA
Understanding of the dynamics and trends in intercollegiate athletics in general and
NCAA Division III in particular
Preferred Qualifications
Ten years' experience in athletics administration at the collegiate level
Intercollegiate coaching experience
Affiliation, experience and active engagement with professional organizations appropriate to the institution and position
Additional Information:
Classification/Salary Range: The Director of Athletics is a United University Professional position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $95,000.00 to $120,000.00 annually, with an outstanding benefits package. For more information please see the Full-Time UUP Benefits Summary. Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year appointment UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
