Description: Job Summary

The Area Manager is responsible for managing a wide range of support functions and all activities relating to building operations, building systems, safety, security, maintenance and services, and facility budget control for Physics buildings including Jefferson/Lyman, LISE, 38 Oxford, Hoffman Lab, Palfrey House, and the Oakridge/EPS Seismograph Building, 60 Oxford, approximately 600,000 sq. ft.

Position Description

  • Leads all aspects of building operations to ensure the highest quality service is provided.
  • Provides leadership, supervision, and guidance to 3 staff and multiple embedded vendors.
  • Develops, prepares, and manages annual building budgets and requests.
  • Establishes preventative maintenance programs, and oversees processes needed for maintenance, emergency repairs, safety programs, and renovations.
  • Analyzes, plans, schedules & manages multiple projects and renovations including some capital projects.
  • Reviews computer-based HVAC, security & fire systems, monitors safety compliance, coordinates inspections, and ensures compliance with codes & regulations.
  • Directs and oversees the day-to-day activity of custodial staff, mail clerks, building trades, and numerous contractors to ensure timely, cost-effective, and correct completion of the work.
  • Maintains the security of the buildings through proper attention to access control, security procedures, and the condition of locking devices.
  • Responds to emergency situations as appropriate during working and off-hours.
  • Carries out programs of the Office of Physical Resources.
  • Continually reviews security and facility needs for portfolio.
  • Continually manages and monitors the project and work order systems.
  • Works closely with OPRP and Harvard University Office for Sustainability staff to implement best operations and maintenance practices, and to actively participate in FAS greenhouse gas and energy reduction efforts and goals.


Basic Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive work experience managing technically sophisticated science facilities.
  • Experience with relevant computer tools (MS Suite, Email, Scheduling, Work Order System, HVAC Controls, Security Access Controls).
  • Supervisory experience.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent decision-making and organizational skills.
  • Must be highly skilled in written and verbal communications and the ability to work well at all levels.
  • Solid knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations for operating a high-hazard facility in an urban area setting within an educational, research-oriented environment needed.
  • CFM certificate, BA/BS desirable.


Working Conditions

During emergency situations and severe inclement weather this position is designated as essential and critical to the operations of the FAS.
