The Kentucky Chapter has a robust prescribed fire management program. We work alongside of government agencies to improve forest health and resiliency by strategically implementing prescribed burns in the central Appalachians landscape. Your role as an as needed seasonal fire employee is critical to our success. We typically assist with burning 10,000 acres to 25,000 acres per season which makes for a busy time. With this amount of burning, you will receive some valuable experience around ecologically based prescribed burning in hardwood forests.
In preparation for the spring 2025 fire season which begins in February and ends in middle April, the Kentucky Chapter is hiring As Needed Burn Crew Members to assist with prescribed burning near Middlesboro, KY and elsewhere in eastern KY. As Needed Burn Crew Members are employed for a maximum of six months beginning in February 2025 and ending in April 2025. The As Needed Burn Crew Member works on an as-needed and as-requested basis under the supervision of the Fire Manager. Work needs and hours are closely coordinated with the Fire Manager or designee. This position is a workforce multiplier when extra personnel for wildland fire operations are needed, therefore, there is no minimum hourly requirement and work is based entirely on need and availability of the individual. During fire operations, the As Needed Burn Crew Member may be assigned to positions equal to their official fire line qualification(s). As Needed Burn Crew Members will work with federal and state partners on a regular basis and may travel frequently. The As Needed Burn Crew Member may work on fire assignments that require travel of up to two weeks based on your availability. The As Needed Burn Crew Member must reside in Central or Eastern Kentucky, in proximity to work areas. Housing is not provided, however, work related travel expenses are reimbursed.
As Needed Burn Crew Members are responsible for the safe and effective implementation of prescribed burning, fire line preparation, and use and maintenance of equipment. This is an exciting opportunity to apply your existing skills in fire management.
The As Needed Burn Crew Member (ASBCM) participates in wild land fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, and other tasks as assigned. The ASBCM will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks. As part of the ASBCM's ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wild land fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, tribal or indigenous, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an administratively determined, short term federal employee). May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $18.00 - $20.00 per hour based on fire qualifications and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
